Hilarious and epic LP so far!

I'm thinking of getting this game, is it really that good compared to other Total Wars?  I liked Rome for a while, then I got a chance to play Medieval 2, and loved that, because it was not just military maneuvering, it was also diplomacy, espionage, economics, etc.  I don't like a pure military simulator, because I'm not that good at military strategy and don't like losing.  Is Shogun 2 a good game, for a guy like me?

I've played it a bit and its just meh as far as total war goes, your better off just sticking with Medieval 2 simply due to the modding community.  Especially once mods like Dominion of the Sword and Europa Barbarorum 2 come out and really make it epic.

I've played Rome and Medieval II, and if you want a more involved non-battle game I'd say the later games are probably better as they seem to develop more on the campaign map for every game. That said I've heard that Empire can get really dull because all you do is spam line infantry.

Chapter 4: Don't stop me now

A measly six months after their defeat at the hands of our daimyo, the last Hanchameta fortress falls to Date troops, marking the end of their clan.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Getting bored of nothing happening aside from outside wars and other stupid things like that, Kenchan got the wonderful idea of educating himself. You might think this means he hires a teacher for the job. You'd be wrong. While his trusty (drinking) partner and favourite monk (out of one) Chessandgames does spout out some wise-seeming sentences from time to time, Kenshien turned to another source of wisdom. Other people. After all, the Uesugi may have something to benefit from improved foreign relations. He got so much into this whole diplomacy thing that the traders of our clan started complaining of the workload. Some ships were packed so full of goods the sailors had to make the journey on donkeys! (Which they had to import from Europe because that's where donkeys live, so it was quite problematic.)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

While this was enough to occupy our respectable alcoholic leader, his brother was still bored. Very much so. Bored out of his mind, people who don't know the Uesugi would say. Those who do would realise there's not much mind to be bored out of. Manking summons troops from all around the clan, then decides to attack the neighbouring Ikko Ikki clan. What stupid name is that, anyways? And instead of being proper buddhists like the audience-favourite Changumayha, they follow their own made-up religion called Ikko Ikki. How bloody original. The first fort to be attacked is Kingkong, which, while only defended by a few men, is quite a respectable work of architecture. The VIBMCHP who for some reason was escorting the army was drooling all over his kimono at the sight of... the castle, of course!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He may not have been entirely honest during his - sadly now usual - speech, considering his brother is probably not even aware there is a war going on. The strange phenomenon has two possible explanations, and drunkards all across the clan are having heated debates over them. One is that Kinchen is occupied with this diplomacy thing, the other is that Manmun didn't tell him. I suspect the latter is true. Lies and dishonesty aside, he shows his tactical genius by acknowledging the fact the enemy is inside a fort. The man shows promise!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He divides the army into 3 groups. The middle one, composed of four bow ashigarus, a veteran and an elite yari ashigaru and the warrior monks, is also escorted by Mancheng and will go for the main gate. The left group, composed of two elite yari ashigarus, will go for the left gate.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The last group, on the right, is similarly composed of two elite yari ashigarus, and will circle around the fort using the forest as cover and will attack from the back.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As the middle group gets into position, the four hundred and eighty bow ashigarus open fire. Manchingun has the sudden urge to shout "Our arrows will blot out the sun!" but then decides against it. That's so last century, after all. But fashion aside, it is impossible to deny that the enemy is taking heavy losses, and the arrows do cover a large portion of the castle's interior. While the barrages are not exactly set up according to Feng Shui, they're effective enough.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As only a few enemies are left alive, the gates are burned down and some quite aggressive yari ashigarus storm in to slay the survivors. They're super effective!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After the "peaceful occupation" of the fortress and the surrounding ghost villages, (Which are never there during a siege, they must teleport away or something. Like those Janbo soldiers did.) it turns out that the entire Buddha-damned population is following the mockery of a religion called Ikko Ikki. Chenmusang sees a possible cause of the problem in the Ikko Ikki monk sitting outside the fort. After this, soldiers kept telling the tale of how he "convinced the enemy agent to abandon his cause", which is the strangest euphemism I've ever heard for "drank him under the table then slit his throat", but hey, whatever works.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The VIBMCHP, after his experience with the enemy castle, decides to return home and improve our capital's fortress. He needs stone for this work, but thankfully we're already trading for that, what with Kinchung's focus on diplomacy. Don't ask me what our previous forts were built of if we didn't have stone, that's beyond me.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Man-ga, still bored, takes another, practically empty enemy castle, and finally sees some fun on the horizon as scouts spot an Ikko Ikki army which isn't laughably small.

Well, I have to say I tend to fight a lot, but that's also because I want action for you guys. It's a pretty nice game, I love it, and I'd say that it's a bit better than Medieval 2, vanilla.

To all the people who are following my LP: If you like it, please comment to show that you're reading and liking it, it means a lot to me!

Am I the only one who's worried about Date? How reliable is the diploAI in Shogun2? It says Date is friendly, but at least in Rome that meant WAR IMMINENT! I've only dabbled a bit with S2 so I haven't experienced the more subtle changes made in comparison to the earlier titles.

If they are indeed reliably friendly towards us, fine. But just in case, are we capable of stopping (and crushing) the Date, if such a situation would present itself? Are you going to destroy those enemy fleets that keep raiding the traders? It would improve our trade profits and we would get to see some sea battles too.

In case it isn't clear, I do indeed read and like this LP. Good job.

If push came to shove and a war broke out between me and the Date, I'm fairly certain I could win, but not without much effort. Though with PPoA finally bearing fruit, our armies will suddenly become much stronger.

And about those ships: Well, yeah. I have two bow ships and one medium ship, while the Ikko Ikki have 5 ships in one of my ports (Which I just captured) and some 12 or so ships in the fleet raiding the trade route. I'll see what I can do about it though.

Chapter 5: You are a dead pirate!

...In a lazy town!

Kenshien is still incredibly amazed by what others usually refer to as a bland and boring thing: Diplomacy. Probably because it's one of the first times he's not in a constant delirium from sake. After consulting with the spirits and feeling warmth spreading through his limbs, he gets the idea that those Date folks are not nice. Why would they even call themselves Date? Given their current politics, it's probably because they'd like to arrange a Date between their yaris and everyone else's arse. Nomenclature aside, he strikes a deal with them. If they don't attack, we don't attack, but other than, they can go shit on themselves for all we care.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After an entire year of building up, our glorious navy stands ready to deliver deadly justice upon our heathen foes! Admiral Yasuda Michifuyu leads the fleet of vengeance that will strike down the Ikko Ikki pirates like a thunderstorm of fury! Three medium bunes and six bow kobayas, all fully crewed, now stand ready to move out and confront the enemy fleet, filled with cowards and pitiful men.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

PPoA is still going with full speed, the naginata master dojo has been built and three hundred and sixty warrior monks are training. Rumour has it they're trained in the ancient art of "Drunk kung-fu", which raises the question: Is Kenshung their teacher? And that raises a whole host of quite awkward questions, such as... Forget it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ha! Cowardly pigs, those Wako Pirates have been spotted near our shores! They are lead by the fearsome pirate Sakakibara Munetane. He will prove a fine practice for Admiral Yasuda indeed. Let us strike them down like a thunderstorm does a tree!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Courageous in battle as any worthy admiral, Yasuda wastes no time holding speeches of grand magnitude, and illustrates a simple plan to his fellow captains, all brave and skilled men, from first to last. Three-three bow kobayas will circle around the enemy fleet showering them with flaming arrows, to let them feel what it will be like for them in the bowels of Hell! The admiral and the two other medium bunes will strike into the middle of the enemy fleet and board those sea rats!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Those loathsome curs are yellow in fear! Truly our grand fleet is such a majestic sight to these lowly scum. Let us make sure this is the last thing they see!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As our bow kobayas get close, the archers stop their merry songs and dip their arrows into fire, then let loose those bolts of fiery death! The enemy ship catches flame, but those curs are quick to save their lives and put it out. Let's see how they fare against five times as many flaming arrows!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As our medium bunes get close, they can see the cowardly enemy, and those can see the fierce pride in our eyes. They know their end is nigh, and it is indeed. Our skilled seamen throw their hooks across the gap, and pull along like the mighty heroes of old legends!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Woe has befallen us! Admiral Yasuda has fallen in battle! He was shot in the back ten times by lowly pirates who surrounded him. He held on as long as possible and won the battle for his comrades, but at the price of his life. The soldiers, seeing the death of their brave commander, charge furiously into battle with a fire in their eyes and a war cry on their lips, and make short work of the bastardly pirates.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We have gained victory, but at what a price! Such a man will not come again as the brave hero Admiral Yasuda was. The fleet weighs anchor both literally and in the spiritual sense, as every sailor is struck down by the tragedy. It is obvious the fleet can not move on with a heart heavy as this until at least spring. Admiral Yasuda's body is placed on a burning raft of peach flowers, and hundreds of brave men weep as his earthly remains float down the rivers of Tokanwa Bay.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As a side effect of Kenchung's increasing interest in diplomacy and other bland stuff like that, the clan's coffers are growing exponentially. Money makes more money, as the saying from around four to five hundred years after now goes. Indeed, it is so much money Kenshibun and Manchika are now confident they could buy themselves all the whores in the world, as was their original goal. The Uesugi family will live! Or die of STDs. We have yet to see.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

An Ikko Ikki parked near Echangen during the spring, and Mirmur is getting increasingly worried about them.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After some thinking, he decides that enough is enough and those Ikko Ikki must pay a fine for illegal parking. So he goes out with his entire fucking army, like every good parking officer would.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He has shown a slight promise in realising that the enemy army, mainly made up of archers, will suffer more from the rain than we do. Of course, that doesn't help the eleven hundred soaked and cold men, but they're just peasants, so who cares? Expect those warrior monks, but those are fuelled by booze, so they probably don't even feel the cold. Or anything, for that matter.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The main group's first two lines are composed of two bow ashigarus each, then a line of three yari ashigarus, then the warrior monks, and they're escorted by Manmin. The ninety light cavalry are off to the side, and will flank the enemy army and attack their archers. It's a suicide mission, as usual, but the horses don't know, so it's fine. They won't be too scared.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The enemy army is made up of three troops of bow ronins, and two loansword ashigarus. The enemy outmatches us in quality, but we're almost double their number. This will be a tough battle.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After a short exchange of arrows, our cavalry charges a straggler bow ronin troop, hoping to spread confusion and cause the enemy to rout. They are forced to retreat due to the heavy fire from the two other bow ronins, but they did their job.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our archers finish off their work, and the ronins soon retreat. Considering they're wandering people without a home, I have no idea just where they retreat to, but I couldn't care less. The same goes for Minkang, who's enjoying a fine sake a bit away from the fighting. By a bit, I mean as far as humanly possible without being called a coward. Which isn't very far, but still.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our infantry charges up, tired of standing around in the rain, and the cavalry returns for another pass at the remaining archers. The enemy army is soon thrown into disarray, their general dies, and even Menchun does a bit of fighting. A bit.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Where are you planning on expanding? Further west along the coast? Subjugating the orange/yellow faction? Beating the crap out of Takeda? Something else entirely?

Whatever it will be, I assume you will up the ante once you get a sizeable host of warrior monks ready to cut through the enemy ranks.

The orange blob is actually the Ikko Ikki, they're really huge. The Takeda are most definitely a worry, but the Date are getting stronger by the day, they're just conquering the Hojo. To be honest, I haven't thought too much about the future, I just go along with what's happening.

Crush the Ikko Ikki and move further west (preferably hugging the coastline) and just wait and see what Date does in the east?

Assuming Takeda leaves your border alone and Date respects the alliance until it has no other option for expansion it would give you a fairly strong Date to fight later in the game after they've crushed all other opposition. That may or may not be what we want to see.

Chapter 6: Things heat up!

Chingachgkuk's friends are, as we all know, many and are increasing in number every nine months. Among his friends, or enthusiastic pre-teen girl fans who scream when they see his monkishness, are a few who're a bit worried about his health. They live in Takeda territory, in a former Yaknchihamay province, and heard rumours those horse-lovers want to give us some of their live. Mainly in the form of horses. And bows, and spears, and other forms of cold steel. And indeed, pre-teen girls high on sake may be a better source than... Well, surely they're a better source than something!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What did I tell you? What did I tell you? Nothing, actually. But Kenchieng almost missed a night's sleep because of what happened. Then he drank sake. And wine, and other forms of alcohol. That eased his problems enough to let him concentrate on the tak ahead: Sleep. However, not everyone is so happy, because even some Uesugi realise that the Takeda declaring war on us is a pretty bad thing, even if we're joined by the Date. Good thing though, is that the Hojo did not join the war against us. They're still continuing their Phony War with the Date though. Seriously, ever since the Date declared war, nothing has happened. Not a single battle. Do those people even know what a war is? Then again, we Uesugi shouldn't be insulting others for being stupid.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the meanwhile...

Our great fleet must not stop, and after taking some time to rest their sorrow and weep all their tears, our brave and legendary sailors sail out to take the fight to the enemy! Well, to our glorious trading port, a true jewel of Japan, because the Ikko Ikki scum are blockading it. As the fleet approaches, every sailor ready to fight the glorious fight, our hawk-eyed scouts notice the loathsome Ikko Ikki flags in the distance, and upon getting closer, can see they belong to four medium bunes.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

To honour a fallen hero, Admiral Yasuda, who is now a greatly revered legend in all Uesugi lands, the battle plan is kept the same. Two groups of three bow kobayas each flank the enemy and hopefully break up the enemy group, then our three medium bunes can board and overwhelm the enemy in smaller pieces.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As our hawk-eyed trusty archers shoot the weak enemy ships with glorious fire arrows, the first close combat action of the battle begins it's chaotic fury. Our brave, and grievously outnumbered sailors charge across to the enemy ship, and kill nearly ever last enemy soldier. In the end though, they are so exhausted by the chaos and insanity that is battle, even though they are true legends, that both ships give up the fight and surrender.

(Honestly, I had like 10 archers and 5 yari left on my medium bune when I boarded, and they were constantly "winning decisively". I think it's because the fake admiral was on that ship. Then both my and the enemy ship surrendered, which was quite weird.)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our bow kobayas are making passes alongside the slow and cumbersome enemy ships and their dumbfound crew, and kill many enemies with their trusty arrows and fire arrows before having to turn around again. Our other two medium bunes approach the enemy with a fearsome war cry ringing from the decks of both of them, a war cry that will resonate throughout the history of Japan, and one which shook those curs to the bone.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Soldiers prepare again to face the loathsome enemy in battle, and they charge across the gap with a fire in their bellies and a prayer on their lips, and I don't ask anything more of them. Fourty thousand hours of training have been put into this moment, one which will focus the attention of our men to the limit, and where we will show those cowardly curs who is the lord of the sea.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The last traitorous heathens try to flee, but our bow kobayas hunt them down like vultures do the dying animal. We have gained victory on the seas this day, and it will be a victory to remember for all times!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There is no rest for the wicked, a saying by people who apparently either like resting or don't like the wicked, seems quite appropriate in our situation. But really though, we Uesugi aren't really wicked. We're religious and dumb, so the gods should really like us. Not long after the enemy Ikko Ikki fleet is defeated, a Takeda army appears near our capital. While surely the winter killed some of them off (And they call us stupid...), their army is huge and their general is apparently pretty accomplished. Or Takeda leadership gave him all those stars to make us believe he's skilled. Self-fulfilling prophecy and all that stuff, it might be a good idea to try for ourselves!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After waiting three months, because hey, why not, the Takeda army finally gets off its ass and sieges the capital. Which might have been a pretty dumb idea, considering there is more than seven hundred of us and we're defending. Then again, their troops are veterans of more battles the Uesugi had in total in the past years. Which is not a lot, but still, their troops are really good. Ours have barely been recruited in anticipation of a Takeda attack.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now we will see if the VIBMCHP did his job well enough. Does letter-resistant equal attacker-resistant? Let's see. I mean, it does look like a pretty nice castle, I have to admit, but will it work?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Some idiots are staring into the sunset, but they do pull their eyes pretty close. Some idiots can just never be understood. Kingenshin holds a pretty nice speech in the meanwhile.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That is, until we realise he's talking to a door. That does sort of ruin the mood, let's be honest. I wonder what he had to drink for that. Like, honestly. Sake isn't strong enough for that, even for Japanese people. Then again, it's not like I believe in any land that's not Japan, just saying. You know how it goes.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Kenchingan took a walk around the castle to inspect what it's like. I mean yeah, sure, he does live here and all that stuff, but he never really had a good time to look around, and now it seems quite important. The castle is surrounded by a river, most of which is easily crossed, but there are two deeper areas where bridges lead across.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then, while walking around, he notices a very strange thing that draws his attention for the rest of the battle. What could it be? Perhaps a sort of static bicycle for gyms? But then again, what is a bicycle and what are gyms? He's getting such strange thoughts lately.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh look, there's another one! Such a strange conspiracy! These must be the work of witches, he'll order some women burned after the battle. Perhaps those Obusa Nabado or whatever they're called.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Realising their commander is not going to do much, the soldiers finish the inspection and organise themselves. The castle is made up of three rings. The first ring is made up of two halves which don't cover the entire outer surface of the castle. A small bit on each side of the second ring is directly exposed to the enemy, while the third ring houses the castle.

The first ring will have archers stationed on the walls, and the two gates will be guarded by two hundred and forty warrior monks each.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The two gates leading up to the second ring are guarded by one hundred and twenty warrior monks and one hundred and fifty yari ashigarus each. The gate to the third ring is guarded by veteran yari ashigarus, and the third ring itself houses the daimyo, and fourty-five warrior chicks and ninety samurai retainers make sure he's safe contemplating up there. Or drinking. Whichever he prefers.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Interestingly, the enemy army has three generals, but the one supposedly leading the army is Shingunban or whatever his name is. They probably won't be too effective.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The enemy army is made up of two larger groups. One, coming from the north, is made up of two smaller groups. The left one contains no archers, but yari and katana samurai. The one on the right is made up of two bow ashigarus and a yari ashigaru.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The group coming from the south is made up of three smaller groups. The left and middle one contain no archers, while the rightmost one contains their three generals, and two bow ashigarus. Now that we know where the enemy is coming from, a unit of bow ashigarus march across the castle to help with the southern side.

As the enemy approaches, they are greeted by a new invention, our fire arrows. Even though they're in the water, it'd appear they can burn just fine.

With their archers trying to provide some covering fire, their samurai on the northern side start climbing up the walls. They probably thought the archers defending the walls would be easy to kill.

Surely the archers would be easy, but they meet our warrior monks who make short work of them. Meanwhile on the southern side, the enemy manages to establish a foothold inside the first ring, but they are stalled by an impromptu yari ashigaru flanking attack, while warrior monks hold them back and almost make us proud of being Uesugi.

Realising their honour is lost, their generals choose a quite compliacated way of suicide, and charge up the walls, expecting god-knows-what.

They probably also realised this was a stupid idea when they met a few archers volleys head on, then got trampled by an angry daimyo woken up from his afternoon nap.

Despite the initial worries of the soldiers, the battle is a shining victory for our forces. We have killed every single enemy and lost only three hundred and fourty two men. A unit of bow ashigarus scored one hundred and eighty five kills, setting the record for this battle. Another one scored one hundred and eighty four, they're probably pretty mad now.

The only thing that happened in general was the death of 71% of the fort, and that wasn't really worth mentioning.

Nice. Things are heating up. Too bad about those Ikko Ikki. You could probably just go and conquer the Takeda now that you crushed their army if it weren't for those rebels. Could you hold your western border against the Ikko Ikki and use your eastern forces to take on Takeda now that you've killed off a decent sized army of theirs?
