Dragons can't swim?
« on: January 22, 2012, 11:49:55 am »

Just what it says. I got one visiting my fortress. I heard it can be caged easily, so I wasn't really worried, but then an ambush come in, so I decided to play it safe, and retreat inside the fortress (I really suck at creating a decent army). Well, the goblins start attacking the dragon, and I imagined it would burn them to ashes, as it did with a rather stupid marksdwarf of mine. Instead, it dodges, and ends up in the river. Now, I have a floodgate connected to said river, that leads in my fortress, so I am expecting it to try to enter that way. Instead, it is still sitting there, without moving (I had time to wall the reservoir, so that now it's completely safe). it doesn't seem to be willing to leave at all, and winter is going to freeze its ass and end its life just like that... So, is it that they can't swim, or this one is just particularly dumb? I was almost thinking of putting together a rescue team, as I can't bear to see it die like that... I wanted to cage it!

I think... they lack the ability to move underwater... one moment

arena testing says they can swim even with no swimming skill.

It can't be that old, since my world is at its 136th year. Does it change its disposition toward buildings and its ability to swim?

If it cannot swim it should be drowned soon after it fell there, so it might be just stupid or has nothing to do but sit there. It is hostile to your dwarves so I don't know is there any other way to get it from there than dig a ramp to river (so that your stupid miners won't run away after seeing it) and sacrife some dwarves to get it up from there.

Then I am guessing this one liked the river so much it decided to stay where it was...  :P It should at least try to destroy the floodgate, even if it can't reach my fortress anymore, right?

As far as I know, they can't fly.

Uh, I built the ramp, but still no signs of moving... But then I took a closer look to it:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Is it too hurt to move?

no it is still a dragon but it is not fully grown, so it is a bit weaker.

Well, I am fairly sure its fire attack is still dangerous enough (it was my first time meeting a dragon, the flame scared the shit out of me, I must admit)... I don't have the equipment for a direct assault, so caging it was probably my best choice. Now the problem will solve by itself, but I am still a little disappointed.

Almost all life in Dwarf Fortress that is not dwarven has innate swimming skill and will never drown except in a sealed room. Everything can also escape without a ramp.

Dragons have innate swimming skill too, and the injuries shouldn't keep it down either.

The unfortunate thing is that swimming pathfinding does not work terribly well. Monsters will often take up residence in a lake and stay there indefinitely, luxuriating in the water instead of searching properly for a way to continue to wreak havoc. Your best bet is to lure it out with surplus dwarves stationed on the water's edge, but even then there might not be an immediate response.

I am not sure luring it out is worth risking more than a dwarf or two. Winter will do the job for me, and I will have to start worrying about sieges, soon, as I hit 80 dwarves, and I am finally getting something done, after hitting adamantine. I am producing high quality stuff, and that will attract the attention of ill intentioned goblins, I am afraid (by the way, if a caravan from the elves died, will they show again next year? They had an untimely meeting with an ambush, and displayed really poor skill in defending themselves).

Nope! In normal DF dragons can't fly, nor do they even have wings! (Which is kind of strange since cave dragons that are supposed to just be "polluted" normal dragons have wings... :-\)

Elves bring less stuff if few or zero survivors returned from the last couple of expeditions, but in the current version there are never dire consequences from failing to protect them. Many players deliberately burn all elves.

I noticed the dragon is dented that once happend to one of my dorfs and he would no longer move even with burrows or millitary orders, also the fort was spiraling still wouldnt move.
In fact I was trying to kill him at this point just would not move, must be a glitch of denting.

But I did have dented dorfs that could still move so I dont know.
