That's rather simple, how about a MSPaint tilable blueprint?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This design would be both infinitely repeatable, and have self-closing security checkpoints periodically, so that if one section is compromised, the rest of the fort remains safe. Each of the squares has 16x16 space to put something in. If this pattern was used, it would probably be best if it was only used for some part of the fort, perhaps the workshops/workshop stockpiles area.

I could fit a spiral staircase, with security barriers (same two wooden doors on either side of a pressure plate) into a column of 16x16 rooms, if the z-repeat was every 8 blocks.
Not a bad design but it sprawls a little for my tastes and has more corridors than it needs. I liked Wannazzaki's idea of starting at bedrock and building up rather than out. Really what we need is a strong spiral staircase which we can expand off. I haven't had a look around what we've got so far so it might be past time to design. If not we need to know what foes can do on our territory so we know how to secure areas.

Well then. After a day of planning Deathwatch and running it. I am back. The forts been tarted up a bit, also, the wall? are we going to sandwich magma in there at all? I think we should

Right. The new fort is Deepgate. I've been working on the defenses, when complete everything inside the sand wall from the sky to the bedrock will be as safe as possible. When complete, there will be of course be magma on the second line of sand, to fall on those trying to dig in. Also, the sand should be to the bedrock. As a proposal, I say all mining in Deepgate should be strip mining to increase the to-the-bedrock moat. This will be efficient, improve our defenses and stop us linking far away caverns to our very heart.

Sounds a bit overkill. That and someone could get over if they applied them self cleverly.

Raiders tend not to. They are idiots carrying nothing but weapons and food. Carrying resources isn't something they do, or mining for that matter. they echange playerkill loot for stuff.

I'd rather our defenses be overpowered than underpowered. True, no system can be completely safe from attack, but we can make it as difficult as possible. The old fort fell because it was the MC equivalent of a DF fort with a dozen openings protected by wooden doors in a world where the sieges are always trolls. This will not happen again if I can prevent it. I failed as Mayor of Tallowlashed, failed to mandate safety, failed to mandate weapons and military organization. I swear I shall not run for office again until the blood of our enemies has washed the dishonor from my beard. When I have another 9 notable kills and a Title, I may consider running again, but until that day I shall work solely to ensure our safety.

On that note, we need more military organization. This is not to criticize Wannazzaki, our brave captain of the guard, who did more than any dwarf to try to stave off The Siege of Autistic Virgins, personally making attacks on our foes with many a magma bucket and blow of his fell axe. Rather, I want a few plans made. Wanna, if you are still willing to be in charge of defense in Deepgate, I'd like to see you (once we've established ourselves a bit more) mandating training, the formation of a militia and war supplies, as well as being generally the dwarf in charge of defense. One voice (and of proven bravery) is easier to follow in a crisis and practice in acting as a group will greatly boost our combat effectiveness. Having Wannazzaki call out the marksdwarf squad when people are camping outside the fort would be a much better response than everyone just doing what they feel best.

Also, the gate. We need one way out and only /f home in to be the order of the fort. An airlock gate (with purge mechanism) will allow us to send out squads to drive away invaders without letting them slip inside like a non-airlock would. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a moat to the bedrock to dig...

I've dug a sizable area out of our mines for a tree farm. Once complete, our underground will be entirely self sufficient in the unlikely event our bedmoat is overrun, our walls climbed, and our town pillaged.

Don't make the same mistake I made, which was to put torches on the walls. Also remember we want the ceiling so short that we can chop down the entire (preferably birch) tree without dirt scaffolding.

Well i'm taking a personal hand in the current defences and Waywards plan is a sound one as far as i can tell, mostly because as long as we don't die and our mines remain entirely disconnected from the fort they can't even BUILD into the fort, no outsider blocks can be placed on our land. So there is that. Second of all Uristqwerty seems an avid enchanter so im putting him in charge of creating enchanted gear in case we DO need it, everyone is to gather exp where they can to aid him in forging weapons of legend. Anybody wants in the military and isn't familiar with pvp or even spends their time on DF on peaceful i'd run some practice sessions with swords and water buckets in place of magma because it is so useful at slowing and damaging foes. In theory this won't be needed but being able to do more than spam the attack button is always useful.

It also destroys their enchanted diamond bullshit gear which their allies cant loot and /home with if we get the upper hand.
