I was reminded today of yet another thing the lawyer does that is invaluable. A client of mine was nervous as hell filling out what we sometimes call "catch and release" paperwork for when he was booked and bailed. I was right there not 2 feet from him along with the officer. 

The thing about awkward silences is, people try to talk and fill them. This applies when they are in front of police filling out paperwork and the police know this. No.... No, no, no, no.

Do not talk; not that; never that....

The seemingly small but incredibly important thing is the lawyer talking to the officer for a lot of reasons, but for starters:
1.) If I'm talking to the police officer while you're filling out the paperwork, then you're not talking.
2.) If the police officer is talking to me, then maybe I'll get some information out of him. If I'm having a good enough day, the officer doesn't even realize I'm pumping him for information.

You see how that got turned around real quick just on those two things alone? The person who talks loses.
