Lecture: Don't Talk to Cops
« on: January 20, 2012, 07:07:12 pm »

This is perhaps the best lecture out there on what you should do in the event of being approached by the police. Figured I'd share it here.
Part 1
Part 2

Not as far as I know. I know it looks long, but this is very interesting once you start listening.

Already seen it, so I'll recommend this very informative and entertaining lecture wholeheartedly.

And if you've just watched that and want something similar...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqMjMPlXzdA

Despite the OP completely dropping the ball on explaining why the video is awesome (explaining why your right to remain silent is one you should always use), the video is truly worth watching and has my seal of approval.  Remember that even if you're completely innocent and never plan on doing crimes, knowing your rights is super important.

It's basically a lawyer and a police officer pointing out how anything you say can be used against you, and, specifically, not for you.

The "BUSTED' video linked above is in a similar vein, and is about your right to refuse a police search.

I watched this same lecture online about a year ago. It is pretty enlightening and useful information should you ever need to use it. Basically the lawyer and a cop explain why it is never a good idea to talk to the police, in an interrogation or whatever, because legally, it can only increase your chances of being convicted and can never actually help you not get convicted.

Here is another good video about interacting with the police put out by the ACLU. Its entertaining AND educational!

(edit: Link is the same one klingon posted, I am messing this whole internet forum posting thing up today)

Someone else already linked it and I commented on it.  Looks like you should have 'searched' the thread and 'remained silent'!

Yup, welcome to my world.

You'd be amazed how many people really think they are smart enough to talk their way out of things with the police. They aren't, period. I have lost count of clients who have said immensely stupid things to inadvertently convict themselves.

Three rules of law:

1.) Never, ever piss off the judge, ever. They are right until and unless you win an appeal. Good luck.
2.) Prove it. Not by your standards, no one cares what you think, at all. Must use legal standards.
3.) Shut the hell up. No.... Mouth closed.

In my country if you irritate the cops and there arent alot of witnesses about they have a fun habit of charging you with abusive language, resisting arrest and assault on a police officer, known as 'ham, cheese and tomato'  cause thats how common it is.  Ive found that being somewhere else is usually a much better defense against the police than relying on their honesty.  But yeah, dont make a statement and never go anywhere with them unless they formally charge you.  Ditto for any search that doesnt involve a warrant, often they will threaten to get the dog squad to do a sniff of your car/person, then things will go worse for you once they have grounds, generally the way this will pan out is they will hold you for 1/2 hour then go hassle someone else, the dogsquad barely ever responds to petty stuff, they have better things to do
