Which weapon should i spend iron on?

I've just dug up iron and have
smelted it. Now i don't know which type of weapon i should craft.
Iron has a "neutral" density. not too light and not too heavy.
Should i use it's weight to cut sneaky snatchers in half with swords or
shall i rather crush their skulls with Blunt weapons?

I'd say that you make edged weapons from iron and if you have some silver make blunt from that. Btw iron is pretty decent for everything :P

I say all,

3 spears
3 axes
3 maces
1 pick

make your squad out of it and then make the armor (using uniforms, it WILL be a pain to make your dwarves wear armor without it)

obviously you can change the proportions if you want a different approach

2 spears
4 axes
3 swords
1 mace
1 pick

copper for shields and blunts if you have any

If you don't have any way to smelt it into steel then I'd say go with iron axes and use the rest for armor/shields. If you can make steel though, I would hold off and go for that.

If you live in a heavily forested area, go axes. When off duty the axedwarves can double as lumberjacks. Also axes are great all-rounders.

A few of everything. You never know what you might come up against, and some of the weirder megabeasts can only be harmed by certain categories of weapon.

How much iron do you have? and flux? (marble, limestone, etc.) ---> maybe steel? You can trade for flux...
And what do you expect you'll be fighting?
Gobs? --> axes if unarmored (or your military is skilled), Hammers otherwise
FB? --> spears if fleshy, axes or hammers otherwise
Dragon?---> your screwed. but bolts maybe?
cave crocs / cave crawlers / evil cave denizens? ---> spears or axes.
GCS? ---> screw iron, get wood... wooden cages that is.

Also:
Dwarves can dual wield. Dwarves can dual wield shields too. They may be able to dual wield while dual wielding shields, but some might argue this is cheating / glitching.

Copper and silver will do just as well for blunt weapons or ammunition. If steel is out of the question, I'd suggest a mix of edged weapons focusing on spears. Those are good against most beasties, and decent enough against armour of the same material.

If you can get some flux one way or the other, I'd use the steel on picks if you heave enough for everyone (finest general purpose weapon) or axes if you have just a little (to supplement a mostly-spear military; axes can make a bloody mess of soft targets but made of iron they're unlikely to get through armour or even thicker bones).
