Sounds like an aquarium would be the most sensible idea. Whether that is the best is up to you.

Dinning room aquarium. Have trap door above it, drop unsuspecting everythings down trap. Happy thoughts for all.

Sadly, they can't be bred at all in the current version.  They're egg-layers, and nest boxes don't work underwater.  So even if you can get a breeding pair, you can't start a sea serpent farm.

But it's still hilarious to tame it and then drop goblins on it.  They don't do much if not tamed, since they have the basic wild-animal behavior and run away unless cornered.  And if tamed, they don't really move much, so you have to drop goblins almost right on top of them to get them to attack.

You can't drop it on goblins from above, unless you're going to enclose the dropped water as well. They will be very poor fighters on land and will drown with the water drained away.

In adventure mode, if you sleep on an ocean beach, sometimes you will be 'ambushed' in the night by a sea serpent because the beaches are technically ocean biomes. You can walk up to it and kill it at your leisure and butcher it for a stack of like 400 meat.

That's the must nonchalant goblin ambush I've seen.

And I was just gonna suggest breeding it. :( Damn, I hope that gets fixed next version, I want a sea serpent farm to feed mermaids to!  :'(

Is it possible to savegame mod them to give live birth?

It's pretty easy to do.  Open creature_standard.txt.  Find the [CREATURE:SEA_SERPENT] entry.  Scroll down to [CASTE:FEMALE] and delete the following lines:

Code: [Select]
[LAYS_EGGS]
[EGG_MATERIAL:LOCAL_CREATURE_MAT:EGGSHELL:SOLID]
[EGG_MATERIAL:LOCAL_CREATURE_MAT:EGG_WHITE:LIQUID]
[EGG_MATERIAL:LOCAL_CREATURE_MAT:EGG_YOLK:LIQUID]
[EGG_SIZE:6100]
[CLUTCH_SIZE:1:1]

That should fix sea serpents to give birth live again.  Also, you'll need to change them from [PET_EXOTIC] to [PET] since the dungeon master is still bugged.  Remember also that if you're changing this on an active save, you need to edit the raw files in the save folder for that world, not just the default raws.

You may find this thread useful reading on the subject:
