Weapon trap. In the mayor's bedroom.

Yep. I once had a dwarf decorate the same large gem over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over because it was the first thing he started decorating with bones and large gems can't be moved because they lack any appropriate stockpile.
[/quote]

You can move 'em actually. It requires traders to be present though, and you can only move large gems one at a time, but it can be done.

Good to know that I am not the only one with this 'problem'.

I'll just send one of my migrants off to battle a siege with it.

Does it weigh any more than an undecorated chestnut training sword?
Nope, both <1 sadly.

It's actually usual behavior. They also look for the "closest" item through z-levels, so if you have a weapon stockpile right below a craftshop where you put a decoration order through, the craftsman might go 10 levels below to grab a crappy training weapon to decorate instead of the gold goblets you have 2 tiles from their shop.
I'm fairly certain this is not the case - what's actually happening is that they see that "3 tiles up/down" is closer than "4 tiles north/south/east/west" because it's only considering absolute distance from point A to point B rather than wasting precious time doing pathfinding.

In other words, 10 Z-levels down will never be closer than 2 tiles to the side, but it can definitely be closer than 11 tiles to the side.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I'll make a note then to use more sensible thrown-out-of-my-ass numbers then in the future.

At least your dwarfs didn't encrust a threadbare sock with gems.

Sell it to Elves.

Now, can anyone tell me what mistake has been made here...?
None at all.  When the elves buy it, they will have paid ... dearly.  :D

If you wanted to trade it, the elves wouldn't buy it because it's wooden.

Sadly.

So the natural course of action is to give it to them anyways - in weapon form.

Weapon trap. In the mayor's bedroom.

No, with just a single training sword that's a danger room, so in no time you'll have a Legendary Mayor, much more difficult to get rid of.

This is what I said.  When the elves buy it they will have paid ... dearly. Have you ever ordered your militia to kill an elf with a training weapon?  Even when they are unconscious it takes a lot of attacks to finish them off. :)

Kill tons of random animals and elves with it and then continually have it be encrusted with the bones of what it has killed.

Yep.  Can't sell artifacts.

DON'T LET YOUR MILITARY GET ATTACHED TO IT.

I just realised what a disturbing idea that ACTUALLY is...

Weapon trap. In the mayor's bedroom.

No, with just a single training sword that's a danger room, so in no time you'll have a Legendary Mayor, much more difficult to get rid of.

Weapon traps don't trigger on civilians, nobles included.

It's an exceptional training sword, not an artifact.

Weapon traps don't trigger on civilians, nobles included.

Not if you stun them first. No dodging, no trap immune.

Stabby stabby wooden stake to the heart.
