although this isn't a particularly import i'v noticed that dwarfs will eat at the closest chair to the food stockpile even if you have a dinning room properly defined from a table, this is rather annoying since now all my dwarf have a "lack of tables" negative thought just because i used spare chairs to increase the vale of a nearby room even though i have a legendary dining room only a few steps farther away

Of course they won't eat in a "dinning room!" How are they supposed to know what "dinning" means?

(More seriously, I'm 99.99% certain this was already reported a long time ago, what with it being mentioned on the wiki and all. IIRC, the wiki suggests never placing chairs without tables for this very reason.)

i actually used to have tables but i took them away because i though this would force them to use the dining room and get the "dined in a great dining room" thought but they just kept eating on chairs

what if i have tables but no chairs?

Making a big dining room and assigning tables to dwarves works well, even better than it should.

You can do what I do.  Put a small food stockpile next to the dining room.  I suggest you make several dining rooms across your fortress to alleviate traveling time and traffic.

I was wondering about the problem, when a thought occured to me: why would you need undefined chairs?
