Wiki blackout
« on: January 18, 2012, 03:36:56 pm »

Will magmawiki get blacked out today?  Like the others?  Some people appear to be using the Internet for politics, today.

No, there are no plans to black out the DF Wiki.

Since it's a rather niche website to begin with, it likely wouldn't do much good anyway.

I was genuinly suprised that Toady didnt "blackout" the Df-page by replacing the Backgroundgraphics or something like that. After all DF is his sole base of income and an unfair block of the side could rob him that.

edit: I am just surprised, i am not saying that he should or should not.

Ok, I wont burn you.

I'll drown you in magma instead. :P

ALSO DARN YOU NINJAS!

Technically, under the new laws, DF would be spared, as would the wiki. Otherwise...Bay12 would be screwed if both the wiki and DF were banhammered. Seeing as DF is an original piece of work, not some pirated crap, I dont think the new laws passed would rob Toady of hiss income.

Also, how do you know Toady doesn't have a day job?  It'd get him more money to develop DF.

Toady had said multiple times, even on the podcasts that DF is his job. He is financing himself and to some extend Threetoe by the donations he gets.

Did you see the dev log today? It seems he's willing to show some opposition so it might happen.

Oh, that's why he's doing it. I thought he just hit enter accidentally or something. Your explanation makes more sense, though.

I was kinda hoping Toady wouldn't get involved.

This whole stupid thing is just annoying me.

"In protest we are choking off your wikipedia access to force your attention.  Hopefully this will make you do what we want.  Have a nice day."

Fuck them.  Well at least toady isn't using it as an excuse to not work like one of my favorite webcomics is.  Heres what I eagerly waited three days for.  e: (not trying to sound like one of those entitlement retards, but it was rather disappointing...)

Spoiler: image (click to show/hide)

I can't wait for this to be over, TBH.

Made up accusation would be enough to shut down his site. This is, among other things, why so many sites and people protest this.

Don't worry, those laws will be back. Just throw "child" and "pornography" in title and you are free to make most stalinist law that you can think up. For extra point make laws that have nothing to do with title (PATRIOT ACT, anyone?).

This whole stupid thing is just annoying me.
With SOPA and PIPA, you will have things like this permamently. Now you would be annoyed, eh?

Fuck them.
Yeah, who needs this "wikipedia" crap anyway.

Hopefully this will make you do what we want.

Seriously? You're getting pissed over one day, and didn't even bother checking about what is was about?!!

If SOPA or PIPA are passed, that's what the internet will be.

Because Toady has talked many times about how he quit his job as a math professor to work on games full-time.  Here's an article that discusses it, although there are many other sources.

Well, you are acting entitled and you are totally missing the point of the blackouts -- if you like these sites, you should be concerned about their future.  So yeah.

When an NPA that can raise millions of dollars just by asking, they don't need to force peoples attention by choking their service off.

If the bill is that bad and it passes I'll just move somewhere else when I grow up anyways.

If a webcomic site is going to get shut down for piracy when they exclusively use content they own and created, I would be rather surprised.

e: Anyhow now that I finally convinced myself to stop cursing I'm going to try to post a little less here, this has great potential to turn into a shit flinging fest and I want to avoid that.

I think this whole thing is silly.  I mean, I oppose SOPA as well and support the wiki blackout.  But when I can't go sites like myth-weavers because they're blackout and now we can't run our sessions as planned?  Or I can't go on board game geek to read up on something I may want? Fuck that.  Leave the blackout stuff to the big sites.

The you don't understand the bill. if a user on a site leavse a comment or message that links to a site that has pirated content, the DOJ will have the power to take down the entire site(without due process). And then it forces the person to have to sue to get their site back.

They don't even need proof to do that. A company can make a claim and thats enough to take the site down.
