Gauging Interest: Space Hulk
« on: January 18, 2012, 01:03:29 am »

Space Hulk is a board game released by Games Workshop and set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It features a small squad of Space Marine Terminators as they battle to survive the genestealer onslaught aboard a derelict clump of ships drifting through space. The action is turn-based, and very tense. Terminators have the advantage of ranged weapons and tactics, but the genestealers are nearly limitless in number and have the overwhelming edge in close combat.

Games Workshop has released three editions of the game over the years, and I was lucky enough to be one of the relative few to snag the latest one. Since there aren't very many people in my area interested in tabletop games in general, and WH40k in particular, I figured I'd try my hand at running an online campaign, a chess-by-mail sort of game. I would be GM and genestealer player, while fellow Bay Watchers would each be allowed to control a single Marine, and work together to complete the objectives for each mission.

Right now, I'm merely trying to see how many people would be interested in such a game. Please share what thoughts you have.

Sounds cool, I've always been interested in tabletop games, but I've never had a chance to play them.

I'd give it a try, never played wh40k. I like the fluff though.

I got all excited when I saw the thread title, thinking you were going to do an LP of the dos game. Instead you've gone one better!

Played the first edition of spacehulk a long time ago, so I'd be glad to learn more about the new one. Especially as it's published by Fantasy Flight games who are a lot better at boardgames than Games Workshit are these days.

Well, heck, I'm always willing to engage in mortal combat for The Emperor, and this seems like fun.

I was like, ha, this looks like a pretty dumb and boring game. I was so wrong. Gentlemen, I have discovered true fun.

Might I ask a question? Which chapter of space marine will we be playing as?

Yeah, I'd be up for it. Think you're going to need more than one game at this rate.

@ Xanatos Jr: Technically this is a board game, not a tabletop. It's still pretty cool.

@ Kilroy the Grand: Don't worry, there aren't a lot of complicated rules or measuring ranges by the inch.
Canonically, the Blood Angels chapter is undertaking this mission. It doesn't really matter what chapter you want to be though, as they don't use the normal tabletop rules. No Black Rage or anything like that to worry about.

@ Lorgath: Supposedly, the rules for the third edition are an amalgamation of the previous two; it draws heavily from the original, while including rules for special weapons and Librarians. I can't vouch for this though, since this is the only edition of Space Hulk I've ever seen.

@ Simmura McCrea: Well, so far there's only 6 of you guys, which is more than enough for the early missions but not enough for later ones. Anyone who dies would be put on the bottom of the wait list, so everyone gets a shot at slaying xenos.

I'm happy to watch. Don't know that I can keep up with running someone right now, though.

It's a good game. I have a copy of it, although I've only been able to break it out for one game day so far.

So here I am, logging into the Bay12 Forums.  I'm not sure whether to feel happy about this, or sullenly admit the loss of what little remained of my soul after all of this Fun.  So much Fun.  So, so much Fun.  <shudders>
First things first.  You're all soulless husks of what might have once been decent human beings, drafted into a sort of moral apartheid from your better natures in the pursuit of things made out of cute animals.  I love it.

Er, no. For one thing, lasguns are Imperial Guard equipment, not Space Marine. These guys use rapid-firing armor-piercing grenade launchers.
For another thing, each Marine has pre-existing equipment. All of the Marines in the box have unique models. For instance, here are a couple pictures of (painted) Terminators:

Now, mine won't look like that of course. I could probably invent rules for all the different weapons and units in the lore, but I'd rather stick to the "vanilla" experience this time around.  :)
