Evochron: Mercenary
« on: January 17, 2012, 08:53:24 pm »

Quote from: Excerpt from the Steam Store
Trading commodities while sneaking past hostile forces, racing the best pilots in the area, mining for diamonds, negotiating for survival, spying for a curious energy company, cleaning dirty solar arrays, transporting an impatient passenger... and that's just on a Monday. The life of an independent mercenary is rarely without excitement. At times, you may choose to work under contract, while at others, you may want to take matters into your own hands in a quest to build your reputation and fortune. Your spacecraft awaits. Your adventure begins in the Sapphire solar system.

Anyone else seen this? It was apparently released yesterday (On Steam, anyway) and looks fairly interesting, but the lack of B12 topics concerns me. Metacritic gave it a decent enough rating, and I do love the Freelancer-esque genre in general, but I'd like to get a second opinion.

Well, a few of my steam friends are raving about it, quote: 'more complicated, more sandboxy freelancer' and a couple of the bad reviews I have read have ended with the reviewer admitting he didnt get past the tutorial.  And its apparently all the work of one nutter.  Sounds Dwarfy.

It was released through the developer's own website back in September of 2010 - there's also a demo available, which I believe you just access by downloading the game through their website but not using an activation code. It's time-limited, if I remember correctly. I've got the demo installed and played it for a bit, but the flight mechanics didn't quite agree with me for whatever reason.

I'm very curious about this game but was waiting for a few people either here or on another site I frequent to actually play and relate their experiences first. Even if most of the bad reviews are based off of overcomplicated controls I'm still hesitant since I'm somewhat tight on money. Then again no idea how long that sale is gonna last...

No, as the handy 'Purchase' link on the site says:

Click here to buy Evochron Mercenary now
(get the full game for only $24.95)

There is a demo download that can be unlocked into the full game, so you can try the demo and buy the game if you like it enough without having to start over.

Is there colonization? I want colonization, dammit. Everything else looks amazing, and I'll probably get it regardless, but is it too much to ask for a space sim with a colony system?

Fake Edit: $24.95? Maybe I'll wait for a better sale...

Interested.

THIS: http://www.starwraith.com/arvochalliance/

It was released in November. Apparently it is a mission based multilayer "mod"? or some sort of extension? IT has several modes to play in and you can do some coop missions or team battles with goals and objectives. Also has an editor for making your own missions. This could add a lot of mileage to the game, me thinks.

It is kinda confusing how many version of the game they have, and how many pages they are on. Most of these pages you cannot find on their website unless you google the name. I had to Google "arvoch alliance" to find this page. I learned about Arvoch through their forums, but not fully sure what it is yet.

Bought it yesterday on Steam.  I only played it for about an hour but it looks pretty promising.  I checked out the multiplayer briefly (you import your SP pilot with all your stuff).  There was only one massive MP server.  I look forward to playing it more.

I like newtonian physics, and the ability to descend through the atmosphere onto a planet is pretty cool.  The guy is still developing and adding new stuff too.

When I logged into the MP server, one guy said over 100 new pilots have logged in yesterday due to steam sales.

The old timers in the community are pretty dedicated to the server and they seem eager to help new players.

Yeah, I saw it on steam the other day and immediately put it on my wishlist.  It looks pretty good!

Definitely picking this up when it comes on sale.

I love the idea of running a persistent world server, similar to what is done with Neverwinter Nights.

You would need to have some sort of "Game Master" powers so that you could pop around the world and spawn NPC ships and otherwise breathe some life into the world. You could then have a P server where players log in and go about making their way through tohe world, and either help or hinder each other as they go. Throw in some factions and a storylinbe with the potential for conflict and now you got something pretty awesome.

I am not sure if this is possible though from what I am reading in the forums. What would be missing is the "Game Master " mode of logging into the game world and the ability to customize certain aspects of the game world here and there.

Hey Postal83, was there a max player count for that server?  And what was the amount of players at when you logged in?  I'm just trying to get a feel of how many people play it online.

Tnx, on the forums they stated maximum server load is 35.  They said usually there is about 16 people on, but that is the US server.  There apparently is an EU server as well.

With the new influx of players, there is talk about another server being hosted.

For confused folk:

-Mercenary is the latest game in that Evochron series---it has a meaty Expansion coming somewhere later this year.

-Arvoch is an entirely separate game series, with Alliance being the newest one for it that came out some months back.
