I might have had a shot at being great, but I think that's gone now... I can't really stop short-selling myself, or thinking of myself as anything but a failure.

You've done what only a truly good person would, and I applaud you for it.

Things will get better with time, just don't let this experience make you jaded.

So, losing savings, furniture and an abusive girlfriend equates to having one's life ruined? Now that's the tragedy i find hard to believe.
He's American : so money mean much more to him.

Yeah, I don't have any advice for you, but for anyone else, let that be a lesson : don't be a white-knight, and when someone borrow you money (yes borrow) make a legally binding document. I know a few very nice peoples who lost money that way. If he/she don't sign it, he/she don't need it. Don't put too much money on an early relationship either, it's not healthy nor constructive. Avoid being married if there is a wide income inequality (fuck marriage anyway).

PS: are you at least sure for the "very sick" part?

You sacrificed yourself for her, you did a good deed,  i dont know if i would ever trust such person enough, unless i knew this person for lots of time, or it was my family. If you believe in life justice, then she will probably die soon with her lover from jail during some crimes or of drug abuse. Remember, life can always be better. Have lots of hope.
Killing yourself is not solving anything, nor is killing anyone else.

No, don't. Pretty sure that's all kinds of illegal. And if you're worried about being a woman-hater, pretty sure that won't help. It's also a waste of 25,000 dollars.

He's American : so money mean much more to him.

Can we please leave any ethnic/national bigotry out of this? Thanks.

It could be phrased better, but he does have a point. Money is a lot more important in America because there aren't the kind of social programs that exist in other nations. Which is relevant to why OP is in such a bad situation now.

If that's what he was getting at, then yeah, that's sensible compared to plenty of other Western nations. Most of them, really.

A wide income inequality is one of the biggest reasons for a marriage, it offers some serious tax incentives if there is a big income gap.

As far as the Op goes this sounds really profoundly shitty.  The fact that plenty of people, good people, are already broke with trashed credit ratings doesn't mean that losing all of that isn't awful and of course the emotional impact of being used like that has to be awful.  You'll make it, don't let it make you asume the worst about people, but do learn the lessons that are here, don't ruin your life for anyone.

Think a bit more :  "don't get attached to wealth" is a lot harder to follow, and a lot more meaningless when "no money" mean no health care and no education for your kids. So no bigotry here , just that il palazzo come from Europe, and probably didn't think about it this way.

Abandon the prospect of her loving you.

There is no potential.

You don't have to pay for education in the US.

What? High school diploma's are meaningless. Scholarships are rare. And student loans bankrupt people.
