In the hunger games I've participated in, those are worthless. One person ends up killing everyone else, and getting everything from all the chests.

I agree that we should probably just see who's better with building up quickly. It removes any 'bonus' advantage, and keeps it fair.

You could also do a Mining Games. Here's the deal:

Contestants start at a spawn zone and released at the same time, inventories empty.

Contestants have one hour to gather weapons, armor, supplies, etc. The world has ores and stuff as normal, but there are also special dungeons with traps created just for the event. The play zone is big but bounded by impenetrable walls (even in Nether).

At the end of the hour, after a 5-minute warning and 1-minute countdown, all contestants are teleported to holding cells in an inescapable arena (like skyblock, or bounded by invincible walls). Contestants get a chance to check each other out from a distance. After a 1-minute countdown (long enough to equip, eat and heal, and swill potions) the cells open and it's a free-for-all.

Of course the arena also contains traps which contestants can trigger by stepping on plates, pushing levers or buttons, and the trap effects may not be what they seem at first ...

Question is, what level of gear will people have in 1 hour? Dig deep and get diamond. Then decide whether to dig and smelt / kill mobs for XP and enchants, or Nether it for blaze rods and alchemy, or just gather a full inventory of lava buckets.

Extended my railway, it now goes to a green peninsula with some pigs and sheep on it further east; total railway length is about 2/3rds of a map.

I'm out of gold to extend the powered rail section, so I'll be doing more mining and dungeon clearing tonight.

I suggest that the arena just be a natural area, like a jungle or thick forest with walls around it- it would be just as interesting, take less time to build, and if we allow block destruction, it could get interesting.

May Notch forgive me...

I know mob grinders are less important in the quest for delicious XPs since there's a lower max level, but I unwittingly gave up the chance for a spider trap utilizing at least four but possibly five or more spawners.

Especially if we don't reset it between rounds.

Can't connect to even get the news page. Seems like there are short bursts of Minecraft's servers not working :/

EDIT: Looks up now.

My Nether tunnel is complete (for varying definitions of complete...).

Now that I can get to spawn, is there anything Bitterwell or the ravine fort whose name I can't recall needs? I saw a large jungle tree covered in cocoa pods, so I guess that reduces the need of one of the main exports of my jungle.

How about gravel? I seem to recall that someone said the roads are unfinished. I've got a few stacks lying around and easy access to some more.

I also remember someone talking about slime balls. Once my tunnel is more safe, I'll begin working on castrating massive quantities of slimes.

Speaking of gravel, what's up with the piston-powered fountain thing?

In any case, anyone can reach my place if they feel like taking a nice, scenic foot path through Hell. It's around 52Y or so, east of the large obsidian construction in the Nether. Once I get more gold, do some more track raiding from various mineshafts, and render my tunnel safe, I'll be putting in a rail line to make it a bit quicker. Yes, I live in trees. No, that doesn't mean I won't rig IEDs up to your house should you decide to light mine on fire. Just a warning. Aside from that, I'm a fairly nice guy. If you need something and I have it, I will probably lend or give it to you unless it's very expensive.

Seems like it's working to me. We've had no downtime on this end, could be ISPs or Minecraft.

I have noticed issues with logging in to minecraft, but if you've already managed to log in, it shouldn't interfere too much with logging in.  Theoretically.

I have personally not had troubles connecting, though.

I have quite a bit of trouble and find connectivity flaky. There is a noticeable amount of lag, but that is inherent in the Planehacked Experience, I suppose.
