PvP will be on, but not permadeath.

Players will be politely asked to avoid the spawn area and surrounding chunks.

This should give new players room to escape the spawn area and build someplace.

Sounds good.

Should probably place a few signs or posts along the newbie boundary just to make sure.

I'm thinking of playing fast and loose with materials. It'll be survival, but if someone wants to do some kind of interesting project and wants a few tons of iron blocks, I'd give it to them. It was interesting to have to mine out everything, but I found that ultimately it caused a lot of headaches with thieving (intentional or not), collecting the stuff, and parceling things out.

What if we keep the neat-o freebuild stuff to a contained area?
It kinda trivializes survival.

Nah, I think that if you're really interested in pure survival, you can just get in a boat and go west young man for several hundred blocks and settle in there. The admins would even help you out with a teleport or two if you want your friends to join you.

The main issue is that serious PvP and freebuild in the manner you are suggesting are two mutually exclusive (or at least damaging) goals. The clever man will set up a ruse for a project, or make a legitimate one, and the admin-donated material wealth will constitute an unfair advantage against his peers. He'll be the only one with an obsidian fortress and two suits of diamond armour early-game.

Freebuild right next to survival removes much of the charm and appeal of the latter. Why would you toil in a mine for hours to build a house that someone with flyhack and creative has set up in seconds? Would you gain much recognition for the added difficulty? Would you truck on without it?

No, you'd request creative. You'd cave in, because survival has little to go for it when everyone else is zipping around with a million iron blocks building spaceships while you are stuck with ruddy stone tools hacking at trees.

I won't be giving out creative mode, it'll all be survival, it's just that if you want to, oh, build a giant city or have a good idea for some project, then I'll give you a bunch of brown cloth or metal blocks so you don't have to spend six weeks mining or hunting chocolate just to get started.

PvP will be enabled, but I don't think it will be a serious part of the game. If it did become a problem, I'd disable it.

Just have PvP by sector. Say, everything positive x allows player killing, everything positive of y allows base attacking. That way, +x+y is free for all, +x-y is arena battles, -x-y is free build, and -x+y is... well... for traps and such maybe?

Oh and add like a 200 block wide buffer zone along each axis that's no building (except maybe railways?) and no fighting.

I'd rather just set up a separate server before that... and I'd rather not set up a separate server at all. I guess I'll just disable PvP, because now that I think about it, I don't see it being a productive part of the game. That may change for arena battles, or if people really get into a warring empires RP or something.

I think it may make a bit more sense to just use signs to mark structures or areas out for PvP or rampantly destructive PvP. With a respectful community like ours and a bit of common sense, it should work out.

Well, we'll try out the "assume everyone will play nice" approach first and if we have any problems, I'll disable PvP.

Now, as for the map, right now I'm just going to generate a totally normal map and leave it at that. I'll start it up tonight.
