So here's what I'm thinking. I kinda want to play minecraft again, but I want to avoid the problems I had last time, namely, I got burned out on mods, rules, and projects.

I want a simple setting with some challenges and some oddities.

Which is why I want to set up a new minecraft server. There will be no mods. There will be a whitelist, and we'll start with the old one from Planehacked. There will be only one rule: Don't be a dick, or you'll be banned.

So, is there any interest at all in a totally vanilla setting?

Sounds good. Might I suggest giving each new player a set of tools, seeds, a magma bucket and two water buckets? That way we can make enough supplies to actually get started without having to roam to the far ends of the earth for supplies.

Or were you thinking creative? Re-read title.


Oh, btw, maybe post a link to here in the old thread so everyone sees this?

Just be ready for the map to take up a ton of space as people quest for villages

After playing around for some time, I've come to the conclusion that it's really annoying and that a normal map would probably be better. That said, I do like the idea of some kind of survival situation. How about a different map? Perhaps a survival island?

I'm currently considering:

ilovepotatoes - Two close islands, otherwise isolated.
Winter - Very challenging
2502629722881746193 - A chain of mushroom islands with virtually no lumber.

Have you heard of the Hardcore fad?
Death=Ban of some amount of time.
Not saying you should do it, but it can make stuff interesting.

Would this include PvP? It's just I've had a strong desire to try this out but I don't know if there would be enough players on here to make it worthwhile. Even without PvP an increased penalty on death certainly adds to the excitement.

And here I thought that vanilla servers were no more. I'd be very interested in having the server back.

Since PvP has been thrown on the table, I'd like to suggest a no-rules, biggest-stick-wins type of PvP survival (obviously there'll be rules, but they'll be minimal and mostly addressing hacking). The main issue of high barriers to entry in such a world could conecievably be solved with more restrictive (PvP-prohibited or something) newbie/high-security zones.

You'd need higher stakes for PvP to be worthwhile and serious, of course, but that can be done in a number of ways.

This server is proof of concept.
I am not sure how they tweaked the rules, but A while ago it was basically Anarchy.

PvP will be on, but not permadeath.

Players will be politely asked to avoid the spawn area and surrounding chunks.

This should give new players room to escape the spawn area and build someplace.
