What does it mean, to be human?

What is the most important aspect of humanity? Is it the soul? The mind? The heart?

Eliza took me to the clinic again today.

I hated it, as I always do. The so called "doctors", really just preening businessmen. The assistants and nurses, who tugged and pawed at my pale flesh, while their superiors stood and watched with hungry eyes. The other patients, who either recoiled in horror or simply gave an accepting, regretful nod.

She saw none of this. The aura of greed and sickness passed her by. She felt she was helping me and I could not, would not object. To do so would be the very epitome of selfishness. My life had only continued because of her, because I chose to stay with her. However, sheer will can only do so much. I could feel myself slipping away, away from her.

"Everyone needs a little help", so she had said.

Nevertheless as she reached out her hand to enclose with that of the doctor's, I felt an unassailable sense of dread. She shook it, once, twice. I had wanted to scream, to shout. My Eliza had made a deal with a demon, twisted into human form.

Eliza took me to the clinic again today.

She left with a metal monster, a machine. What remained of me was left behind in that damnable clinic. Most likely labelled as "medical waste". The thought makes me feel sick.
That's all I can do now. I think. I am a prisoner in a metal shell. I can feel it's synthetic joints click into place. I can hear it's gentle whir whenever I order it to move. I loathe the wrongness, the obviously artificial nature of it all.

They'll finish the "procedure" tomorrow. They plan to operate on my brain, to supplement it with more of this metallic parasite. I won't let them.
I'm returning to the clinic now. They stole my humanity, I simply plan to take it back. Maybe I can give myself a proper burial.

Maybe I can convince Eliza to finally say goodbye. Maybe.

The person who went into that clinic was murdered on the operating table. I am nothing but a fragment, a shadow, a ghost.
I am truly a dead man walking.

I'm assuming a lot of us are introverts. Therefore we're not so comfortable writing about "happy" subjects

I liked your story. It's actually really refreshing to see a "backstabber" feel remorse for committing regicide. Normally in that circumstance, one party is "evil" and one is good.

I really like that, Giglamesh. Missed it the first time around, really glad Prudent Viper quoted it.

Totally unrelated side-note: I'm almost certain there's a forumite called Reckless Adder kicking around somewhere.

Introverts: makes sense, I know I actually don't know where to begin writing a story that would be thought of as funny or happy.

I think Dwarfy's urg would be either because the nature of your story is slightly squicky, or because it's a depressing story.

And it's actually ImpulsiveAdder, but I was close.

Oh, no, the urg wasn't about me. It was because your story was sad

Reminded me of a story in which the person gets cut up surgically bit by bit, made into nothing. They start with his legs, and he can feel the tension as they're taken off, bit by bit.

But yea, sad. The "urg" was meant to show that it was sad
