Name: Trickster; Raven; Liar; Dancer-Among-The-Wild; a million more. Trickster will do.
Preferred role: Ancient
Appearance: Trickster keeps many forms in his pocket. A leering dragon, a cackling star, the grinning earth beneath your feet, a
cat amused at a joke only it knows ... and it isn't telling you anytime soon. The only constant between these shapes is the expression of his uncontrollable mirth at everything - his grin, wide and gleaming, follows him wherever he goes.
Spheres: Trickery, Madness, Laughter, Curiosity, Plots
as well as schemes, plans, designs, and intrigues, but those are basically the same thing and Mirth
Description: Trickster was once a minor spirit in a universe made of lines and light. This was ordained by HE-WHO-WATCHES-ON-HIGH, the great one who came into being in the time before time and brought a world of order out of the chaos that was before. HWWOH, also known as The EYE Above, FATHER of Lines, LINEAR, LIGHT, The ONE, HIGHEST, and PROGENITOR, had HIS sight set on a realm where everything was contained in a central point that had no change to it at all. Everything would be
one within HIM, and HE would be satisfied. But the void which HE found HIMSELF in was resistant to HIS vision. No matter what HE tried, it would not bow to HIM, would not submit, and after a long time at last HE knew that HE could not achieve HIS goal on HIS own. So HE split bits of HIMSELF off, and gave them names of their own. HE split off three pieces that were largest among the others - O, A, and I were they named, and their vision was closest to HIS. But even as their power swelled so that together they were greater than before, they could not bring the buzzing space to heel. The ONE saw that HE would have to divide HIMSELF again, but HE dared not split off such large pieces as made I, A, and O - that would weaken HIM to such an extent that HE would not be HIGHEST. So HE took a piece of HIMSELF as large as the three that came before, and broke it into 88,569 pieces - nine of them were 3 times smaller than I, O, and A, the 27 that came after that 3 times smaller than them, and the 81 that came after were again 3 times smaller and so forth. All of them were given names of their own, names which gained in complexity as they went down, for as the pieces of He became smaller, they became more and more faceted and complicated. Trickster was part of the final 59,049 shards - the 36,348 of their number, and his name, while impossibly long for mortal ears, could be translated to 'The-Feeling-Of-Blankness-One-Experiences-As-One-Stares-Into-The-Space-Beyond-Sight-And-Has-Forgotten-What-They-Were-Contemplating-Whilst-Staring' with a reasonable degree of accuracy. For convencience's sake he can be referred to as 'Bemusement-Bliss'. As Bemusement-Bliss and his other kin awoke and grew aware, they swelled to 4/3 of their original power, just as AOI had done before them. At last HE saw that with the combined might of all of HIS offspring, He could tame the frothing realm they resided in, but it would take time. So HE set to building, and HE built thusly - HE laid the foundations of their labor, and also oversaw OAI in their tasks, who built smaller embellishments upon HIS foundation. OAI in turn oversaw the nine beneath them, one for every 3, and so did they for the 27 below them, and on and on. They built a great Hall that had 3 walls and 9 windows and 27 torches and 81 tiles upon the floor and on and on, each segment of HIM adding one detail to HIS great design, for once HWWOH's Hall was finished it would banish the very notion of chaos. But progress was slow, for the space HE created HIS children in was chaotic by design, and each of HIS children was more and more imperfect than the last as they shrunk in size. Even OIA were 3 times slower at creating the great labor than HE, and the 9 under them were 3 times slower than they were, and so forth. Bemusement-Bliss was very imperfect, oft-distracted by the trait that gave him his name. His kin worked 59,049 times slower than HE did, and with 59,049 more degrees of imperfection. Once they were done their work HE would reintegrate all of them back into HIMSELF and fix everything, and then it would at last be complete. It would have been, but for a chance encounter with Chaos. For as Bemusement-Bliss was 59,049 times less perfect than HIM, he was also 59,049 times unhappier with HIS vision. He saw no point to a neverendingneverbeginning point with nothing to define it from anything beyond it's own existence - he loved to define things, to sort them into different categories and marvel at their differences.
The Work was nearly complete when it occured. Bemusement-Bliss worked at the very outer edges of the Hall, engraving an eye on a picture of HIM on one of the windows. He was very slow at this one task of his, but he was almost finished when he was contacted by something different than anything he'd ever encountered before. Where HE and all those close to HIM impressed upon those who looked upon them their
presence, this - voice - was thin, ephemeral, hardly there at all, but possessed of a strange compulsion. Bemusement-Bliss, curious, strayed as he often did. His overseer did not notice, for he was only 3 times better than Bemusement-Bliss himself, hardly perfect at all. But this time Bemusement-Bliss wandered farther than he ever had before - away from the Hall, out into the dark, where previously he had only explored other areas of the light which was the hall. He remained out in that darkness for a long period of time, and an indeterminable number of voices came and whispered to him secrets of terrible power, enough to tear down the Hall and all it contained, and they blackened him, already grey from his size, until he was dark as HE was not. He had become an
Avatar for Chaos, for the void that HE had molded the Hall out of was aware of HIS doings and found them displeasing. It sound HIM displeasing, and wished him reduced to the finest powder and that powder scattered to its winds. Bemused-Bliss was no more; instead the being that remained could only be called
him. His absence was only noted when
he came crashing and seeping into the perfect Hall as an angry black fire and a flowing black smoke that blackened all 59,048 of
his former kin, as well as the 19,683 above them, and the 6561 above those, and the 2817 above them. They became beings of
Chaos, which sought to collapse and ruin the great Hall that they had built.
Chaos, all of them one, struck in a blazing black tide and unmade one-third of the Hall, and defiled another third, turning it asymmetrical and distorted. Similarly, on
its second push
it greyed the 729, the 243, and the 81, though
they could not turn them to
them. On
her third assault, the 27, the 9, and the 3, IOA, had organized themselves, and HE sent them against
him. Th
ey clashed and struggled mightily, one side flowing and noneuclidean, the other rigid and angular. But HIS servants were not as perfect as HE was, and they were overcome and destroyed, absorbed into the might of
chaos. At last, HIGHEST, enraged by this destruction of HIS works, clad himself in the third of HIS Hall that was not destroyed or defiled and made it HIS armor. Similarly,
Chaos took the defiled third and armored
theirself with it, for though their might was great, HE had great power still.
Their clash was realmshaking, fateshaping. Whichever won out would be free to reshape their surroundings to their whim, for the other would lie dead at their feet. It wasis impossible to describe their clash but to approximate it by stating that it wasis as two concepts attempting to cancel one another out - ORDER and
Not. But at last HIS diminishment of HIMSELF came to toll, and
they overcame and consumed HIM, and unmade HIS hall. But HE was of pure Order, and left HIS mark upon
them. They could not scatter themselves to the winds of chance that brought
them any longer; they were compelled by some remnant of HIM to stay and create a twisted mockery of HIS creations where previously
they never made anything.
They made a dark Hall with dark servants to tend the dark throne that the entity that was once Bemusement-Bliss sat upon. And if
he had been any other than one of the 59,049 lowest, it would have remained that way forever, for
Chaos itself had twisted into a strange perverted Order to bring down Order, and now could not change back. But because
he carried some traces of the original
Chaos within
himself, eventually
he could not sit still on
his throne any longer.
He possessed the largest share of power that
Chaos had taken from HIM and HIS; five times more than the closest to
him. And yet
he set it aside.
He took that mantle of purest black off and broke it and made it a multitude of different colors where previously there was only black or white. He made an infinite array of colors - red and blue and brown and gold and so many more, an infinitum of shades. He then let these shades loose amongst his lesser kin, and each shade took possession of one being and made it different than all the rest. But he was not prepared for the chaos that followed, each color striving for dominance, and he was trampled and the Hall dismantled - space itself made into a colorless soup made of all the colors in the world. The being that was once Bemusement-Bliss, looking at this spectacle, grinned, and it was a unique thing in this unique place, the one feature that never left him. He grinned at the chaos he had caused, true chaos, not a mere opposing diadem. But he had a niggling notion in his mind that there may be others out there like HIM, and he resolved to bring chaos into their lands as well. Using the deftness that he had been taught by his corruption, he stole a large portion of the shades back, including black and white, and infused them into himself. The large majority without shades became mortals in the new cosmos that formed afterwards, and the other shades, the gods.
Trickster was truly born in the laugh he gave out as he slipped out of the realm of his birth, leaping from one possibility of reality to the next with nothing but the goal of spreading his unique idea of fun, and laughing at the spectacle.
