I shouldn't care much about this topic since I live in Turkey and we already have a shitty internet (I scream in joy if I can get past 125 kb/s download speed and dial-up isn't that far away in the past) and we already have a shitload of blocked websites, which are mostly porn and torrent websites but there a lot of useful websites that got blocked. Like the incident which our retarted goverment blocked Blogger because of ONE blog. Thanks to our government, every internet user in Turkey knows all the basic things about proxies and DNS options. I just modify my hosts.txt if the need arises.

BUT, most of the websites are located in USA. So in the conclusion, I do care about this and everyone who doesn't live in USA should care about this.

So, to all non-USA citizens, even if you don't live there at least sign all the petitions you find about this topic :P

Old topic is somewhat old, but there is news about the megaupload case that was interesting. Its more or less about how the attempt to try MU the company under criminal law does not work because New Zealand is not part of the US, and some other things.

MegaUpload's defense is seriously kicking the US govm't in the nuts. The only way to win their (poorly thought up) case right now is to blatantly disregard any semblance of due process. But that's been their strategy from the beginning, so I don't know how this thing is going to end up.

Necro!

Just noticed on one of my feeds that the "Six Strikes" Anti-Piracy Policy is going into effect today in the U.S.
Some people just want to watch the world burn onto a CD. I say, what's so wrong about that?

I am unimpressed. The ISPs are just barely going along with this as is, and once it starts to hurt their profits they'll either drop it or stop enforcing it. Who knows how dedicated they even are now?

Besides, this opens up an excellent avenue for a new ISP that delcares total non-cooperation with the RIAA and MPAA to arise, or for one of the current ones to profit. Just one of the major ones has to realize they can get the whole BitTorrent crowd by breaking with this scheme and the whole thing falls apart.

Could they even handle the tens of millions of court cases this would cause?  This just reminds me of under-aged drinking and marijuana.

No - that's why they're trying to do it via a method other than the legal system.  I think a similar scheme here ran into trouble after it became clear they were sending the notices to mostly the wrong people.

They just need to gather evidence against everyone, and when there is someone they particularly dislike, they can just pull out the evidence against him and put him in jail forever.

That's generally the idea.  The U.S. uses stuff like this more and more often.  Use laws and legal initiatives as massive dragnets that bring in as large an inventory of people as possible that you can prosecute at your leisure.

The authors of the french HADOPI three-strikes-law, proving that there is always a deeper end to go off, is suggesting a mandatory web filter on all computers (built into OS kernels), to block people from visiting sites on an official blacklist (torrent trackers, etc).

That's the gist of it anyways. The source is a pair of french articles:
