If those bills get passed, people will start spamming copyrighted material, to the point when the government actually decides to nuke the whole internet for violating the law
I believe this is the actual goal here. Internet is just too troublesome, it'd be so much easier for governments if it didn't exist. Of course, shutting it down outright would be too bad for their ratings, so instead they're chipping away at it until there's nothing left.

Well, if this is the goal, and if it does get passed, then congrats, Lamar Smith and the other supporters, for destroying the other half of the economy.

Censorship will utterly destroy the internet, not just in America, but worldwide. And the internet is already a very significant thing in the modern world; destroying it will have catastrophic consequences.

What is really funny looking from the outside is basically how much a corporate pawn the US government is. You basically have the corps that would benefit from the legislation opposing the corporations that wouldn't. It's like a boxing match between Google and the RIAA.

And it's like that for every issue. I remember reading a NYTimes article about a proposal to switch the one dollar bill for a coin. You had two opposing groups, one funded by foresters and print shops, the other by an alliance of miners and slot-machine operators.

You know something is wrong when the best way to influence you government policy is to find a corporation that would benefit from whatever you want and influence them.

On another note, I was wondering. Could Google/Facebook directly display banner attacking the congressmen who support that bill to IPs from their district? After all, they're people and have a right to free speech, right?

Some other networks that are hopping onto the bandwagon:

Craigslist
The entire Cheezburger network
Wired
XKCD
Theoatmeal

May be more, but those are the ones I've seen. I recall seeing a thread on reddit before they went down about a pornhub I'd never heard of before blacking out. But I can't remember what it was called.

Actually, I rather hope this passes.

If there's one thing the modern world needs, it's an end to the corporation. And the fact is that it's only if something really drastic like this happens that corporations will look horrible enough that we'll get rid of them.

Go, go, go RIAA; shoot yourself in the foot.

That's the scary thing. We only have rights because someone hasn't bought them yet.

Generally anyone who cares about the internet already knows of Corporative nastiness. So you'd be killing the internet, stopping people from finding out about corporations, all the while letting them win.

Are ANY of the major media companies reporting on this at all? I've only seen an article on CNNMoney, and it was buried pretty quickly.

The most you could get out of it is a new breed of anti-corporate terrorism.

There's a couple articles on MSNBC's website, but, as noted in the article, 1 of the 2 co-owning corps of that organization is against SOPA, at least in its current form (Microsoft).
