I wonder how thorough you have to dig to find unauthorized usage of copyrighted material on any random congressperson's website.

You should really have to do a "think like a bastard who abuses laws" test before you propose a law.

I believe they've got this covered.

A.) Yes, and awesome of you. B.) On the one hand, I should've specified "think like a bastard who abuses law" [besides the person making the law] test before you propose a law. C.) They shouldn't be abusing the law in the first place. :P

Not too deep, considering the tendency of staffers to use google images.

But you people don't seem to get it - of COURSE this law is going to be selectively enforced. You think if one of these companies or politicians steals your shit and plasters it all over their page, you're actually going to be able to shut them down? Fuck no. That power is only the big, important people - not people like YOU.

They will have some explaining to do when "their" subscription of every porn magazine ever is delivered to their place of work and "Uh, it's not mine," somehow seems like something you'd say if it WAS yours. Good luck convincing your boss of that....
Well, now...  If I ordered some porn for myself to my workplace[1], I'm pretty sure I could convince my bosses that it's the same people who are making malicious accusations against them, to discredit the business in the eyes of the management of our host building.

And there'd be several levels of meta-Machiovelianess in whether to stop the subscription or not, after all, an innocent party wouldn't be able to stop a subscription (and the real perp might not be able to, having severed all ties from the original subscription), so a guilty party might well do that, or a guilty 3rd party might stop the subscription, and then further levels of "What would it be like if..." might well kick in to switch it back and forth... :)

Am I over-analysing that situation?

[1] Should I ever think that to be a good idea in the first place, there's all kinds of reasons why it wouldn't, which I won't go into right now.

Yes. The negatives are getting sued for doing it. The negatives of SOPA include giving trolls a weapon they can't be sued for using.

Somebody needs to change the title.

Also, just noticed, Mojang has joined the fight against SOPA and PIPA.

Done, sorry about the delay, I was out in the countryside away from my computer.

And best of all.....Google has put up an information banner against SOPA and PIPA, right on their homepage.
I'm not seeing it in either IE, firefox or chrome. It might be because I'm being sent to google.co.uk instead of google.com. Can you post a screenshot?

That banner is only on google.com if you have a US-based IP I think.

Going to google.com (not .co.uk or any other relevant national version, outside of the US, but you may need to click the link on the bottom right) gets the "Tell congress..." link, but not the Google Doodle-esque bit.  But I'd imagine that it'll appear on the Google Doodles pages at some point.

Wikipedia seemed to work, when going to the main front page, but 'blanks' when I went somewhere specific, even for me in the UK.   But I could over-ride that (and have) by merely stopping the browser before that happens.  No regrets, because I understand already and support them, but if anyone desperately has a college assignment to write, today and for however long they're keeping this up, I feel for them!

Oh, it looks like the SOPA page doesn't blank... I wonder which others don't? :)

(Truean: I was considering a "no proof either way" argument, where denials cannot be countered.  I'm fairly sure I could wing a subscription for myself/a victim and make it paperless and virtually untrackable.  Much more so than, say, grabbing similar material from the 'net would.  Consider it a Princess Bride/Vizzini scenario, when it comes to the outguessing what the other party might do, given the chance.)

The (english) wikipedia blackout is global, but there are ways to access the content if you really need to. They're detailed on the FAQ page linked to from the blackout screen, but the simplest way is to just disable javascript.

EDIT: It's sweet irony that MPAA (I used to think Chris Dodd was a relatively decent chap when he was a senator) and their friends are trying to label the blackout as abuse of power.

Quote
The moves were described as an "abuse of power" by one of the highest profile supporters of the anti-piracy bills.

"Some technology business interests are resorting to stunts that punish their users or turn them into their corporate pawns, rather than coming to the table to find solutions to a problem that all now seem to agree is very real and damaging," said Senator Chris Dodd, the chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America.

"It is an irresponsible response and a disservice to people who rely on them for information... A so-called 'blackout' is yet another gimmick, albeit a dangerous one, designed to punish elected and administration officials who are working diligently to protect American jobs from foreign criminals."

"Look guys, that company that runs entirely on the money and goodwill of its community voted to shut itself down for a day! Ye gods, they're being oppressed!"

I don't think the irony is enough to kill him, but didn't the government almost do the same thing several times this year? Only that would have had more consequence?

Sad thing is that, someone out there will believe it, and they will gain a few supporters from this blackout.

Seriously though, anyone with a brain should take political statements with a grain of salt, I mean, just look at the government's track record of corruption.
