The DOJ web server hosting http://justice.gov is experiencing a significant increase in activity, resulting in a degradation in service.

Not sure if DoJ hasn't heard of a DDOS or if they are just idiots

More likely they're trying to spin it for people who don't know what a DDoS is. So, I'm going to go with idiots.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Or they just don't want to admit it. Or something.
Well I guess a DDoS is basically just a lot of directed activity to crash stuff.

Fun fact: megaupload clones are already popping back up (you know, the usual suspects, bz and the like)

It isn't exactly easy to counteract a "simple" DDOS guys, especially when it's done in large numbers.

The question is whether it actually accomplishes anything besides bringing down the site for a bit.

That's my contention. Sure, it demonstrates the public can react if it so wishes. It doesn't actually change anything though. It's more damaging to businesses who rely on constant, unbroken operation of their services.

Now if Anon can get into NSA databases to start deleting the millions of unwarranted dossiers they've opened on people, then I'll start saying they're making a difference.

And, unfortunately, that isn't any of these people. If they brought down internal servers, leaked emails and other incriminating documents from executives, or otherwise did anything but temporarily take down what is essentially an advertisement (even for the government sites), that'd be something. But that's much much harder.

If the ripost is coming, I guess the real hackers are preparing for it.
However, hacking the websites of Universal would be much easier if they weren't being DDOS'ed. Just saying.

If they want DDOS to have an impact, they have to block access to all the online commerce when profits are going to Universal. For example, if Universal has artists selling songs on iTunes, they could take down iTunes. Block their selling platform would have an impact and can be done by something as simple as DDOS.

The real problem is that many companies around here, small and big, used MegaUpload as a way to put data, big files, records... With MegaUpload taken down, some are already talking about closing their company because they lost years of work.
Now, I wish I knew more about international law, but because all of this is happening in the USA, shouldn't the US law apply ? What I mean is, shouldn't EVERY company in the world who had sensitive files uploaded on MegaUpload be able to form one MASSIVE class action for getting their data back and ask a repayment for the damages ?

I realize some people are really stupid, but still.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

While I agree, he does have a point. This is grey legal territory and I doubt even the government understands the implications of what they're doing.

for the same reason some people use bitlocker or any of the other file lockers, they don't want to worry about providing their own remote file server and dealing with the security issues that causes. So they pay for a file locker account and can reasonable safely use that to tranfer files from remote locations.

Couple of points, most of which have already been made:

1. Defending against a DDOS isn't that easy. It's like if 50,000 people rush the gate to your compound. You can keep them out, but they're not actually trying to get in, they're trying to make sure nobody else can get in. Tough to do much about without resorting to draconian measures.

2. DOJ is never going to openly divulge details about the extent to which an attack is successful. It's just common sense security protocol.

3. All they took down, from what I'm reading, is the public-facing website. Which is 99% PR. All the operational stuff is on a secured Intranet, for precisely this reason.
