Congress has announced that it is shelving the SOPA Bill after the white house announced it's opposition to the bill (and PIPA) in what appears to be a victory for mass democratic action!

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/political-animal/2012_01/putting_sopa_on_a_shelf034765.php

All that remains now is to ensure PIPA is not passed and remain vigilant that they don't try to sneak SOPA back in.
The government's response to the petition

Update:
SOPA returns to haunt us all
It appears they have only put it off until febuary when the bill will be marked up.

Wikipedia, Google, Reddit and other major sites are censoring all or part of their sites in protest of the SOPA and PIPA acts.

Update:
The founder of megaupload an several of his staff have been arrested in New Zealand and will face extradition hearings as part of a global operation to seize megaupload domain names and servers.

Update: both PIPA and SOPA have been shelved by congress on the 20th in response to peoples concerns about the bills

There's still PIPA to worry about.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

I don't really like that now everyone jumps out telling on how SOPA is bad.

it was stopped due to concerns about losing voters, not because it was bad. and this mean that it will only come back later, on a sneakier way.

The Protect IP Act is going to the Senate floor on January 24th. This is a simple psychological tactic: Offer a bunch of crazy options that get shot down, and then use that contrast to coerce people into accepting a less-bad deal when really they shouldn't be talking to you at all. Happens in haggling and door-to-door scams all the time. In short, we have won nothing here.

Also, what the hell is OPEN? People keep talking about it like it's a third bill mixed up in all of this, but I can find nothing on it.

They'll probably just end up sticking the provisions in next year's NDAA.

Remember the four people in Congress who actually knew how the internet worked? It's their approach to the whole thing.

EDIT: And after reading through the entire Online Protection & ENforcement of Digital Trade Act, I can't really tell how it differs from DMCA.

I am not surprised in the least.

Nor am I.

Corporate lobbying and sponsoring was a terrible idea and remains a terrible idea.

We should probably celebrate when it's certain it won't be coming back in terrifying zombie horror.

There is only one clear solution: Burn it with fire. And by "it", I mean the various Hollywood lobbyists acting as the zombie juice to keep this thing alive.
