Wakfu - Ogrest's chaos, the ecosystem, and you
« on: January 15, 2012, 11:50:05 pm »

NOTE: MESSAGE VARISCITE OR JAYDIRI FOR AN INVITE TO THE GUILD. ANYONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO INVITE, BUT THEY'RE ON THE MOST FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN.

Wakfu is a newly made, fairly tongue in cheek, and VERY pretty MMO with a turn based strategy vibe released into open beta recently by ankama games (makers of dofus, a very similar game, and the prequel to this game).

If you've played dofus, the gist is a massive ogre by the name of ogrest finds the 13 dofus, shit goes down, then he gets very sad, climbs to the top of a giant rock pillar and cries until the world is literally drowned in his tears. If you want a more comprehensive read of the plot, check the tutorial area for floating slabs of stone! They have timeline things on them. The game has a pretty awesome plot in general, but unfortunatly most of it is not implemented yet as it's still open beta. As a result everything is free! Unfortunately Dofus was a very limiting game as far as P2P content went. Here's hoping ankama has learned from this mistake. The game releases in February sometime, some people saying late February but February is the only solid date we have.

Anyway it's a fairly basic Turn Based Strategy except you control one unit. You. As such the game is a lot more fun if you've got some people around to play it with. I'd reccomend going to the end of this post and looking at the list and maybe hookin up! Let's get on to the classes! This game probably has some of the neatest most fun class ideas I've seen, and they are all ripped directly from Dofus in concept, and upgraded.

The server the majority of people are going to be using is NOX! Nox is the US/europe server. I'm not sure of any other servers frankly, so uhhh yeah.

A NOTE! EVERY CHARECTER IN THIS GAME USES SPELLS QUITE A BIT! BUT THE STAT SYSTEM IS A BIT ODD, BE SURE TO READ THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE STRENGTH, AGILITY, INTELLIGENCE, AND CHANCE STATS BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING WITH THEM OR YOU MAY END UP BEING VERY SAD!!!!

CLASSES

This game has a LOT of classes. I was originally gonna give a brief rundown of every class, but it proved to take up waaaayyy too much real estate. Instead I will link the website's class section and you can look at that. Take note a few of them are still being rebalanced and are not available.

Every class has a gimmick, and while you can deviate from the gimmick it's typically not a terribly good idea. There are exceptions! Feel free to check out the class discussion forums for some build ideas if you don't like fiddling with that sort've thing.

CRAFTING

It's.... fairly generic I'm going to be honest. Get materials, press buttons. There are hidden recipes that you have to figure out on your own, but it mostly amounts to placing random items in the grid and seeing what happens.

ECOSYSTEM

THIS! THIS IS WHERE WAKFU DIFFERS IN A BIG WAY! The ecosystem is VERY important. After the world was destroyed by ogrest's chaos, they decided to give it another shot and include a failsafe for the whole "hunting everything to extinction and clearcutting" thing. Clan members reside over most areas. They will give you things to keep in certain ranges, like say, gobbals between 100 and 320. If they fall above or below, it's up to you to fix that. You'll get citizen points for your nation (more on this later) and you gain benefits once you hit 10 or above citizen points.

You can get animal seeds from the trapper profession. It is possible to hunt an animal to extinction, but it can be "brought back from the dead" by the government for a hefty sum.

NATIONS

There are four nations. They are lead by the players, and they are all democracies. Government will typically post notices, wars can break out, etcetera. I'll give a brief rundown of them.

Brakmar

Fire and brimstone and metal and one of the clan members looks like a member of KISS and there's a mine called sweet childoormine aaaaaaaa. Theme is awesome. Community is fairly brutal, PvP is fairly rampant, govener has taken funds for his own personal use several times, it's at the heart of all of the current drama right now from what I understand. Not a bad place by any means, but know what you're getting into.

Suifokia

The nation I've mostly taken up residence in! Drama free, Governor is pretty chill, entire place is pretty chill really. Has a seaside fishing port kinda feel and look. If you like going on without drama suifokia is your best bet.

Bonta

Woodland area. Haven't been around much, currently at war with brakmar, and as such currently a part of the drama. Seems kinda uptight to me, but notably less chaotic then brakmar. If you like drama (shame on you) but don't like getting kicked around by your own nation members, this is probably your best bet.

Amakna

I really know very little about this. Based around baking and I think a general like, "castle town" style feel? Not at war with anyone. Still kinda snippy from what I hear. I know very little. Soooooo go here if you like not knowing what you're getting into.

SO, that's the gist. Have a link. Feel free to ask questions, I'll get to you eventually. And yes this is what pulled me away from mabinogi like, a day after making the topic. Sorry guys!

Is it pay for play like Dofus? (Dofus IIRC only let you play in the tutorial level)

Not... yet. When it releases for real in February sometime it will go, I believe they put it as "premium content" for money. Whether this is a fancy word for "F2P trial" or "P2P content, F2P content" I dunno. Also mentioned something about microtransactions? I think that's mostly for vanity items and such though.

This certainly is a interesting looking MMO I have never heard about before this post. I will perhaps take a look about it when I am more awake. Might make a guy. Although I am... Unimpressed with MMOs and Japanese culture somewhat, so I might not make a guy.

@Taz:AHAHAHAHA, well, uhh I have no answer.

@Criptfiend: I'm gonna split hairs here and say Amakna is french. Female charecters are certainly... like that though, yes. I miss the old female Iop in Dofus, as it was basically the same as the male iop with longer hair, and it made me laaaauughhhhh so much. I have still misunderstood the statement but it was due to a typo oh well. You can probably read through the strikethrough anyway.

What?

What does it matter what pretend nationality a place in a game is when talking about the feel of the game as a whole.

Oh man, I friggin' LOVE Wakfu. Here's my character details.

Lyalah / Iop / Brakmar / Nox

I watched the show before I played the game, so I definately knew what I was getting in to.

@Criptfiend: I clearly misunderstood what you were saying with "Although I am... Impressed with MMOs and Japanese culture somewhat, so I might not make a guy." so, my bad. :P

@Tradanbattlan: Eyyy, awesome. Added to the OP.

As a note, if anyone wants to, go ahead and add me. I've got no problem helping out new charecters, especially since I'm making bombs to do some mine excavation in suifoka, and most of their mats drop from low level creatures. May as well have a buddy around for it.

Individually. Your account name is just your account name.

Although, when someone friend's you, they will be able to see you whenever you log in on any of your characters, as it adds your account, rather then the specific charecter.

So... a couple questions. I played a bit of the EU beta a while ago and it was fairly incomplete so I know I like the core of it, but I'm not sure about how much I'd play.
Question 1: How much ecosystem maintenance do you actually have to do? When I played the EU one everything seemed to be in balance already, so there wasn't actually much of a point to it.
Question 2: What do you typically DO when you're playing? Quests(?), grinding, farming for materials for crafting, PvP(?) from what I can see, but what's actually implemented to keep people interested right now/what's going to be in later? I'd rather not get somewhat invested in character then have nothing but grinding/farming to do.
Regardless, there's a good chance I'll download it and hop on for a bit. I'll post details when I have them.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Do you name your characters individually, or do they all take on your username?
When I played the French beta characters had their own name, but there was also some constant username, IIRC.
I'm wondering how much this has changed since it was closed beta many moons ago.

@Taz: Sram's were just recently released, on the patch that released the open beta, so yes, there's very likely quite a bit of tweaking to do. I don't like the invisibility mechanic either, it's very unstable. I do like that they were trying to do something different, but you have to be invisible for such an obscene amount of time to get a decent power boost, it's kind've stupid. You just kind've walk in circles for hundreds of turns and then close in and hope you're not seen despite the fact your perception outranks the other guys perception and you should logically be able to stay invisible.

Also that trap gives you back the WP when it's used, and later on there's a skill that makes it so you can rarely attack and not be revealed. Not much, but it's something.

So yes, next month's patch on the 4th will likely fiddle with Sram. Whether or not this is the "release" patch remains to be seen. We can hope I suppose.

Also yeah, no stat reset yet.. They took forever to release one on dofus too so I was hoping they'd learn from that mistake. There's.... a lot of hoping. Although Dofus had a wisdom stat equivelent so don't think it's going to stop a stat reset from ever happening.

You're better off looking for builds in the forum now if you wanna be optimal or are trying a pretty gimmicky build. It's pretty hard to ruin your charecter for good unless you're gonna be soloing. My Iop is all over the place and he still does pretty good damage.

@Bluerobin:
Ecosystem: It is mostly kept in check, yes. When you do have to adjust it it's usually a pretty minor thing. Every now and then an area is just totally ignored and it flies out of control though. It's enough to get some citizen points out of.

What to do: Usually dungeons. That will also tie into quests. You could certainly also go grinding skills, normal grinding (It's not so bad here, although it can still get pretty tedious),  Exploring couldn't hurt, there's apparently a lot of hidden areas hanging around, I've already found one, PvP is an option, there is a territory taking mechanic, (You can't take over another countries' town just the minor islands they posess) Wars can be an option, but besides from bonta and brakmar it seems pretty chill right now. Run for governer maybe. Become a guard/soldier, although that's definatly a long term goal. Excavate a mine so people can actually use it.

There's a lot of stuff!

@Rakonas: Yeah, the constant username was the account username. Still does that! I like it. And there are two new nations and a lot of rebalencings. For instance you may remember Iops absolutely decimating everything. They've been brought down in line with everything else.
