Games even the simulator ones must be a bit abstract or they will be ridiculous hard and time consuming. I don't support this suggestion.

The disposal of excrement has been a huge engineering problem throughout the time of civilization. I think the biggest reason for not including it and the refusal for it is the social taboo revolving it. But seen from an objective and challenge viewpoint I can't see why it shouldn't be added.

The simplest implementation would be an excrement substance and an additional zone for marking "latrines". Put the zone down stream of the river and it's a fast solution you don't have to think much about to begin with. Eventually you'll have to dig a pit, if you're further below where you can't simply "flush" it out. Finally, when the population rises there's probably a need to provide a sewer system.

There's not many difficult engineering challenges in DF, apart from the ones you set out for yourself. Providing basic needs is fairly simple, at least with the current agriculture mechanics. Planning how to dispose of waste would add much to gameplay IMO.

Considering the "setting", post 1500's / medieval times, waste was a constant issue in most towns and cities. They mostly dumped everything in the streets to let the rain wash it down to the river. Terrible living conditions. Compare with the romans, who lived healthy lives thanks largely to their technology regarding sewers, even though their cities were huge by the standards of that time.

DF is not suppose to be a sandbox game, but with the current mechanics it's actually pretty close to being one IMHO. I think waste disposal should be a bigger issue, with more solutions than "cleaning" and putting stuff in a refuse pile. Besides, how can you deny another use for magma?


As for the recreational intercourse, I fail to see the point.

The fact that this topic always gets responses like these is one reason why it's a pretty exceptionally bad idea.

Hint: If you want to seriously suggest sewage management as a part of DF, try to talk about the subject in a way that doesn't make you sound like a five-year-old who hasn't yet gotten over his fascination with the toilet.

Not a sandbox game? I was under the assumption that the main goal of Dwarf Fortress was to create a fantasy simulation/sandbox game of astounding depth and variety.

@everyone else:
again thanks for all your opinions, insults,invites and so on. Keep on blaming on this topic or supporting it as you wish.. looks like we ain't gonna see sucha feature anytime soon in the mainstream version of DF or we'll loose more than a couple of players.. and I won't ever wish that to an indie game.. more than ever to one as beautiful as DF itself.

As for me, the more I speak about what *I suppose should not be a taboo* for young-sters in 2K11.. especially those who play a game in which there are torn body parts almost anywhere and where a mother can beat a goblin to death with her own just-born baby..but as I already learned, you can never take anything for granted.

But staying in topic in this little poll already came out a few of interesting and fun ideas and I simply can't think that such an addition would be "that awful". As somebody already stated during past the disposal of excrement was a *real* problem and one of he most challenging and dangerous problem our ancestors had to face.
Graned that I must admit that I also understand the point of who simple wants to enjoy the fantasy dwarvish part without knowing *all* the details.. so what I was thinkin is creating something like a "super realistic" adventure mode and a classical adventure mode.
With such a choice developers could put in other "boring real life" mechanics that will make the overall game "harder and possibly awkward" to newbies but will definitely improve gameplay experience to veterans.

Not a sandbox game? I was under the assumption that the main goal of Dwarf Fortress was to create a fantasy simulation/sandbox game of astounding depth and variety.

I think our definition of "sandbox game" differ. Yes, it should be open ended and procedural. What I mean with "sandbox" is a game where you simply build without much holding you back. Like minecraft... I wish for DF to differ on that point, and I believe that's what is desired.

Well even sandbox games have their challenges(all of the ones that I've played, anyway). Not to mention, those challenges are almost completely optional already, which seems like even more of a sandbox game mechanic. If I didn't want any sort of external conflict, I could always set the number of civs to low, and embark on a island somewhere. Or just turn invaders off if I'm feeling lazy.

It's that ability to be able to lead an army against hell itself, or peacefully build up your fort until your heart's content that, to me, makes DF very much a sandbox game.

The main game objective (Staying alive) is completely player made. You could embark somewhere and wait for your dwarfs to starve to death.

I like the idea of managing sewage because to be honest it would be a huge issue for dwarves.

We are living in a self sufficient mountain most of the time.  It would be a big issue to deal with sewage in a sealed cave.

Thats why I like the idea of having to process sewage, it adds an extra logistical challenge that I would enjoy, as well as making the game more logical.  It puts another barrier in the way of nonsensical self sufficient cavern fortresses.  They should exist just not that easily.

I honestly don't know why people are so grossed out by poo, its fucking ASCII thats why we aren't horrified by the gore in the first place.

If we all did just the main game objective, DF would be very boring. We make our own secondary objectives. I don't see how this ties into Sewage though. Didn't Toady mention that towns would construct sewers?

Brown and Yellow Filth are already hardcoded into the game, you can mod dwarves to excrete it, but then they would excrete it all the time and it would get everywhere.  As for weaponizing it you can give monkeys a breath attack of solid glob of filth_b.(to represent them throwing it.)
