Is there a mod that disables the fleet chasing you?

Unless they board into some vital system, where you have to hit them right away or can't afford to remove crew for venting. Depending on the ship layout, there's all sorts of places where this might be possible.
Unless you are in the Rock B ship I don't think so (if you are then you have rock crew members and should be able to beat them down anyway).  The oxygen drains fast enough to prevent double mantises from destroying a system, so with one distracting guy you should be able to stop even four guys from doing any real damage.

Assuming you have at least lv2 doors.

Also, the important thing to remember from my run, the MOST important thing, is that I didn't lose because of bad luck.

I lost because of poor decisions. :P

If good choices allow you to create your own luck there is no reason bad choices can't be blamed on bad luck too :)

If you don't have level 2 doors in a sector where you're likely to get boarded hard: get level 2 doors.

Just got my first victory with the Redtail. It's a good ship once you can get some upgrades. I lucked out and found a Hull Smasher mk 2 early in sector 1. Man, that thing is a beast at killing ships off. And being able to get 6 shots off a round was really helpful. Also managed to find and afford a cloak early on as well. Once I had both of those, it was pretty easy.

Only bad thing about the run was finding the crystal pod but never getting the event to research it. *sigh*

Well I keep getting the crystal pod and then EITHER the zoltan event or the rock homeworlds BUT NEVER BOTH!

Argh.

Yay, that's every ship in the game unlocked!  I'm glad Slug B is relatively easy to get, even if the Disintegration Ray achievement did have me kill two of my own men.

Get a Drone Control System and a Defense Drone.
Upgrade your Shields and Engines equally.
Get good weapons.

Those are the basics. Not dying is generally the most important thing.

Level 2 shields is an early priority - it reduces the damage you'll take in the first couple of sectors a lot.

Teleporters are really good too.

I only skip lv2 shields in sector 1/2 when I'm going with a Hit-or-run Strike-ship. In which case a level one shield is certainly important (hello, Stealth ship...), but level 2 is usually overkill and the 100 scrap could be better spent elsewhere. (Although as soon as you HAVE the extra scrap... I do frequently buy the shield but not power and then not use it unless I'm in RUNAWAY mode and not powering my weapons because they can't get through)

Ok, you can probably survive on one shield if you have a cloak (particularly if you're Stealth B and you'll almost certainly kill or cripple the enemy ship in one hit), but the vast majority of ships don't.
