I don't suppose anyone would happen to have very spoilery walkthroughs for unlocking the other ships, would they?
I've got some pretty vague ideas of how to unlock a few of the ships, though seeing that one has proven my theory on the crystal ship completely out of the water.

Also, on the subject of spoilers...

I still don't have the crystal ship unlocked either. May have come close a few times, but ive never been able to get all the events in order before the final sector.

They're "generic" in that they have every encounter, at least I'm pretty sure that's the case. Sector 1 is Civilian IIRC.

There's a really neat infinite space mod which removes the rebels and warps you to a new, randomly-generated sector whenever you reach the exit gate. It's a new game.

Basically you play until you die?

I'm tempted to check the mod if that is true :D

I remember the first mod for the game giving you unlimited time in each sector. There was no rebel advance.

Roomie picked this one up the other day. We've really been enjoying it, even though the Rebel flagship unfailingly kicks our asses at the end.

Best suggestion for learning the game: Pay attention to what ship configurations you find really hard to beat and adopt those tactics. Eventually you'll get good enough to surpass what the AI can do, but it helps a lot when learning what combinations to focus on.

I wasn't interested in a mod that just removes the rebel fleet, but the linked mod does a lot more.  New items, "minibosses", it sounds like they actually reconfigured the game to be fun without the fleet.  Will check it out sometime.

Tried it with a default Kestral. You start with a lot more scrap and an extra wepon or crewmember.

It upped the difficulty massively by having four layer shielded enemies by sector two.

I had sold my missle launcher for a burst laser by that point. I eventually dies in sector four because I was taking way too much damage and my burst lasers 1 and 2 couldn't pierce their shields.

First tiem I died in a good long while.

Also EVERYONE HAS A GODDAMN MEDBAY what bullshit is this I shelled 75 on a teleporter and they all have REALLY HIGH DODGE.

I didn't even bother trying the minibosses yet.

Yeah, but nearly every system is destroyed and the ship itself is almost dead. I think it's awesome.
