Managed to win on easy with the stealth ship type A while trying to unlock more ships. STILL haven't seen the Rock ship - anyone know if I'm looking for a ship or a non-ship point for the quest start?

At least now I've got the stealth ship type B, which I've heard good things about.

So i died. ON EASY

Yeah, about that. Defense drones are a godsend. They destroy rockets, asteroids, incoming drones... great things, just wonderfully great. Get one next time. :P

So yeah, i caught up with the second form of the final boss.

I had a double laser, heavy laser II and halberd beam. Worked wonders at most things when coupled with the fact that i was running a stealth cruiser. Except that halberd beam is useless against shields and takes 3 power, likewise with heavy laser II. So when a fire wrecked my weapons compartment, everything was lost. On the plus side, i got the Ballistophobic achievement because i never got any rocket launchers. :U (had around 50 missiles by the end)

If you hit your cloak whenever you get the 'POWER SURGE DETECTED' message, the last boss is alot easier.

It's still not all that hard to die on easy. Every situation has it's strategies to use and multiple ways to get through things, but there is still a good amount of luck involved and simple lack of a resource or decent weapons to be found can easily kill you. I just tried my first Normal game is a good while, died in sector 6 due to a distinct lack of any place to repair. I hadn't found a store in 2 sectors. I was doing pretty darn well otherwise. Good weapon loadout, a bit short on crew, but the upgrades were keeping me steady. Just ended up in a situation where I got a couple of heavy beam hits and from there on attrition took me down.

Every green sector has at least two stores. There's no reasonable reason you wouldn't be able to find one of them, unless you weren't trying or you had one of the dreaded "unreachable in a way that won't kill me" isolated clusters.

I hate those isolated clusters.

I was 4 jumps into one when I realized that there wasn't an exit to the rest of the sector, I tried to fight backwards, but I couldn't make it through the 6+ jumps against the rebel fleet.

The "check flight paths" thing is very useful for avoiding that.  It'd be even better if you could project future rebel fleet positions.

So I've got the 'beat final boss' ship, the stealth bomber, rock ship, zoltan one, and engi ship.  But I am bloody clueless as to how to unlock the slug, mantis, and whatever other ships there are... anyone have any luck able to maybe point me in the right direction?

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I think they're quests in each race's homeworld, but I'm not entirely sure.

Also, I don't want absolute spoilers!

Yeah I am in the same boat as anvilfolk, don't want a direct guide just a hint :P  Though I guess I can just keep running through their homeworlds (though if I accidentally blow up the slug boss guys ship one more time I am gonna rage quit... fucking fires.)

Almost all racial ships require that you go through the homeworlds. Then you have to hit the right waypoint and do the quest. Some of them require specific crew or ship systems as well, I think.

The exception is the Engi ship but you can't avoid unlocking that.
