Anyone notice in the kickstarter that the studio is based in Shanghai, China? Am I the only person bothered by this?
I just have a bad feeling that some of these extremely overfunded kickstarter games will become vaporware...
This comment actually bothers me a lot. You're afraid the game won't appear because they're based in China? So everyone in China is a thief who will promise you anything for money? Just seems like an incredibly racist and stupid thing to say...
Spare me your indignation. This has nothing to do with race but human beings in general.
This is all about motivation and accountability.
There have been incidents before where people have essentially stolen/grossly misused Kickstarter money, and they ended up in court. There's an example on the Wikipedia page on Kickstarter. "In May 2011 a New York University film student raised $1,726 to make a film, but plagiarized another film instead. The student publicly apologized and the issue has since been settled.[11][12]" from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kickstarter .
The only reason why that was settled? Because it occurred in the United States & Kickstarter is based there. There's a whole plethora of laws which could be broken by somebody , and a larger number of lawyers which would be willing to come after somebody who conned the public.
On Kickstarter's own page,
http://www.kickstarter.com/help/faq/creating%20a%20project#Acco they say you can be legally accountable. But how is a company based out of China legally accountable to donors primarily in the United States? If Fortune 500 companies can barely get court cases settled in China , then how in the world is a group of donors going to get their money back if some developer goes rogue?
Look at it this way. Give a random person a huge amount of money for any task, and then tell them they can walk away from the task without any consequences. How many people - of ANY race, gender, ethnicity, background - would do the right thing?
