"FTL is a spaceship simulation roguelike-like.

Its aim is to recreate the atmosphere of running a spaceship exploring the galaxy (like Firefly/Star Trek/BSG etc.) In any given episode of those classic shows, the captain is always yelling “Reroute power to shields!” or giving commands to the engineer now that their Warp Core is on fire.

We wanted that experience, as opposed to the “dog fighting in space” that most videogames focus on.  We wanted a game where we had to manage the crew, fix the engines, reroute power to shields, target the enemy life support, and then figure out how to repel the boarders that just transported over!

Neato. I had an idea similar to this for a space-faring Roguelike. Is there like, crew personalities and morale and all that jazz too?

I feel people don't understand how the tech_demo-alpha-beta-release versioning system works these days. Then again maybe it's I who doesn't undersand it...

Oh, shoot, I totally want in on this! I've been looking for these types of things on video games and boardgames forever!

Can't wait!!!

For me though, these games really need a strategic layer. A fixed number of missions or a linear campaign (and yes, even a tree-like campaign is linear) doesn't cut it for me. Sandbox is where it's at... I want to decide where to go, what to do, who to recruit, where and how to die! So many choices!

I've been following this since it's inception, and it's one of the games I'm really looking forward to. If only I were an IGF judge, I could play it.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

The combat is difficult but, being a “roguelike-like” game, frequent permadeath is at the core of the experience

Ehh more like the crutch that has been holding it together.

This statement along is pretty much all that worries me. Hard to learn and long to master is fine and I like the visuals.

The fact that they list the "frequent permadeath" as the "core" of Roguelikes a genre that has been gone so far in that dirrection I even had to dub some roguelikes "Wiki-games". Makes me a tad worried.

I love games with perma death i dont know why but when i die i sometimes hate like elder scrolls you respawn i wanted it to be real with when i die i have to create another char and start his legacy.

It isn't that I think pernament death is outright terrible. It is that I think the reliance on it has hurt a few games that should have actually dialed things back a little.
