So, I just unlocked the Zoltan C and wow, this thing is a piece of shit. The fact that it starts with a charge ion and a drone system is nice, but.. fucking 2 reactor power? Seriously? Early on, you need to spend so much scrap in order to stop relying on that awful battery. Scrap which could go towards better things such as another shield layer.

While we're on the topic of that rock cruiser fire achievement, I just got it without a teleporter. I hacked the weapons room, where a Zoltan was, and I shot a missile at it, setting it on fire. The Zoltan burned to death while trying to open the door.
Can anyone confirm this?

ETA: Confirmed! Fire beam drone + hacking. Knocked the shields down, drone set the medibay on fire. Two guys ran in to put the fire out, I hacked it and turned on the death gas. They died quickly and I got the achievement.

I BEAT THE FLAGSHIP! WOOOO! Second time I've ever killed the flagship! WOO!

And on normal, too! (Then again, I've only played the game on normal, never touched easy or hard.)

And it was Mantis B, which is considered an OP ship, but I needed to beat the flagship with a mantis ship to begin the victory chain. Now I have to learn how to play the slug ship, unlock its variants, and win. Woo?

In terms of learning from this run, my "suspicions" have been confirmed. The second phase of the Rebel Flagship is the hardest and the only to deal with it is beat it as fast as possible.

Also, it's possible to beat the Flagship with no cloak, level 3 shields, and okayish engines if you have a defense drone and boarding crew consisting of four mantids.

This was also one of my first runs where the clone bay actually did anything. Got it early on, made the run highly unethical, but effective.

Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

Which phase of the flagship is the hardest depends on your ship. As I said, I was basically able to shrug off the drone storm almost entirely with my most recent Engi A run, but had issues with the timing of the power surge relative to the missiles at the last phase.

Holy shit. Double Flak IIs are amazing.

I know I only started this run with the intention of unlocking the B layout, but I think I have potential here. Two Flak IIs, a Defense Drone II, hacking to reduce enemy evasion to 0 just before the flak impacts...all I really need to do is pump up the shields and maybe pick up cloaking at some point.

Having multiple Flak 1s is excellent even in lategame, though.

I can see why, considering their short charge time and low power requirement. But since fate threw two Flak IIs at me and no Flak Is, I must take what I can get.

Flak Is fun, I had it only a few times though. How good is the Gladius Beam weapon? I have seen it but never acquired it

..You mean the glaive beam? It's insanely strong, but takes a long time to charge.

If I remember correctly, the game's description of it is along the lines of, "One of the most powerful weapons ever made, this terrifying beam is known for taking down ships in one charge."

Obviously paraphrased.

Ha, awesome. Not even full-strength shields and I take out the first stage of the flagship with no damage done to me. On to stage two!

Rock Cruiser. Twin Flak IIs, Defense Drone II, level 2 Cloak, Hacking, only six crew members. One of them was the Envoy, who has perfect skill in every category, but I don't know how much he really helped.

Last stage wrecked me a bit; first mind control target was the pilot, and with that super shield I couldn't disrupt the mind control with hacking right away. Thus, even when cloaked I could still take damage. Still, I prevailed and earned my first Rock Cruiser victory.

Oooh, the Shivan looks interesting.

Oooh, the Shivan looks interesting.
It is, especially if you get a teleporter.

Also, I finally unlocked my last ship, so now I have all of them. Sweet.

Freespace reference it seems. Despite the name though it doesnt come with a beam weapon like you would expect.
