they're 375mL, not 350

What heresy is this?

And it's usually 355mL or 341mL.
Is that official, or actual (to the ring-pull) capacity?  Because the standard cans (for soft drinks) here in the UK are stated as 330ml.  (I may remember to get the "utterly full" measurement when I go home, in an hour or two, and let you know later today when I get back into work...)

Yep, Aussies have huge cans!  :P

On topic, I heartily commend you for throwing off the shackles of your arse-backwards education system and joining the rest of the world! In terms of thinking metric, yeah, I'd say your best bet is building up a reference system. So, here are some everyday units that are fun to measure;

2m is a very tall person, 1 m is a very short person. 100 kilometres is about 60 miles (so when you start speeding on the freeway, you're probably doing around 100 km/h).

For volume, I'd recommend moving to Australia and drinking a lot of beer;
Quote
A pint of beer in Australia is served in a 570 mL glass with about 500 mL of beer and about 70 mL of froth, except in South Australia where a pint is served in a 425 mL glass and a 570 mL glass is called an imperial pint.
Don't move to South Aust. though, they skimp on beer. Though considering what S.A. beer is like, that's probably a good thing...

For weight, that's a tricky one. Lessee... an adult woman generally won't weigh less than fifty kilograms unless she is *really* short and really skinny; a girl who is pretty short but a normal build should weigh on the 50 kg mark, so go pick up a few short girls ;)

Those are the big three, I'd say. Hope that helps.

I'm 5'11 or 178cm or 1.78m.

100 km/h = 60mph = about the speed you would go on the freeway.

1km = about half an hour's slow walk.
The average person can walk 2-5km/h.

A gallon is roughly four times that of a litre, i think. Imperial gallon is 4.45L, US liquid gallon is 3.79L, US dry gallon is 4.4L.

Moral of the story: Metric is the same country to country. A litre is a litre is a litre.

Except when it's a 'Liter'.  (Although I'm actually with you on the spelling. :) )

That must be some very slow walking because I regularly do 20 km within 6 hours. That's including all the waiting for people to catch up.

useing to systems over here in the uk just plan hurts some times;
i.e. how far can you get on a tank of fuel and how much will it cost?
the car will give you miles per imperial gallon but the fuel tank is in litres.
the road signs are in miles per hour and fuel comes in litres.

as you can see you have to do far to much math for such a simple thing.

so that is how much a pound is, i was thinking that it was made up to make dieter and gym users feel better.

maybe when the u.s. gets round to useing metric thay can stop useing cups to measure food, cups are for drinks not flour.
i mean it cant cost more than 5$ for a jug with metric measures on the side.

If you want to mentally switch to grams, take a science class.

People use yards? I just go with 5280 feet, or go straight to meters.

Americunts? Am I the only one who finds that offensive for a whole slew of reasons?

Edit: Anyway, I find the best way to tell if you are mentally ready to switch to the metric system is the handstand test.
