The goblin king should be a titan wielding a sock.

Black:
Pawn: Short, hunched over goblin holding a whip.
Rook: Dark tower, these are basically large rectangular towers.
Knight: Beakbird, these things are basically dwarf fortress raptors, and well known mount for goblins.
Bishop: Goblin in hooded robes, holding a mace.
Queen: Troll!
King: Demon, the sometimes worshipped head of the greatest goblin nations.

White:
Pawn: Dwarf with axe and shield
Rook: I'm thinking a round tower would look nice.
Knight: By armok, how can we not have a bear? Because seriously, dwarven war bears are awesome!
Bishop: Dungeon master, with a large sword, and covered on flowing fur cloaks.
Queen: The hammeror. dwarf in heavy armour, no sheild, and epic hammer.
King: Dwarven king, with a crown, and a cape.

EDIT: Or the goblin king can be David Bowie...

Great ideas, though I'm thinking of making every piece a bit different, so pawns will likely hold an assortment of weapons. Still, I do like the war bear ideas... not sure if I will do mounts considering the size implications.

Use elephants for the knights. And carp for pawns.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

-Black-
Pawn: Goblin soldier.
Rook: Dark tower.
Knight: Goblin mounted on a beakbird or alligator.
Bishop: Hooded goblin babysnatcher.
Queen: Troll (agreed).
King: Fire Demon (made of fire to explain the king's fragile-yet-vital nature)

-White-
Pawn: Dwarven soldier.
Rook: Bastilla tower/pillbox.
Knight: Giant cave spider, you know you want to.
Bishop: Dwarven war maiden carrying a child in her off-hand.
Queen: Dwarven champion with full adamantine gear and artifact axe.
King: A noble, probably cowering on a throne.

Not to be rude but I'm trying for more... serious suggestions. Not that I don't think elephant knights and carp pawns would be awesome, but this is something I'm planning to put quite a lot of work into.

On another note, I finished a quick sketch of a generic dwarf pawn, it's rather crude and he doesn't have a weapon but it's more concept art than anything. I rushed on his boots because I could not get anything to look right, but I was focusing more on the torso and arms more than anything.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

EDIT: I noticed I forgot to even try anything with his eyes. Oh well, I think I'll name him Brock. :l

EDIT EDIT: For the sake of not double posting...
I added my thoughts inside the quote.

-Black-
Pawn: Goblin soldier. *-* Yes
Rook: Dark tower. *-* Still not sure whether to do buildings or heavy armored guys/trolls... thinking about it.
Knight: Goblin mounted on a beakbird or alligator. *-* Again, not sure about mounts due to their size.
Bishop: Hooded goblin babysnatcher. *-* A good suggestion, we shall see.
Queen: Troll (agreed). *-* If I make the rook a troll then I will probably just make this a high ranking goblin, otherwise a troll is a good idea.
King: Fire Demon (made of fire to explain the king's fragile-yet-vital nature) *-* I really like this one, if I can get the flames just right I'll go for it

-White-
Pawn: Dwarven soldier. *-* Indeed!
Rook: Bastilla tower/pillbox. *-* As before, not sure about buildings.
Knight: Giant cave spider, you know you want to. *-* Such a good idea...
Bishop: Dwarven war maiden carrying a child in her off-hand. *-* Aha, I like the idea of that, meatshield!
Queen: Dwarven champion with full adamantine gear and artifact axe. *-* I think that sounds more like what I imagined the king as. Now, I'm not sure how most of you play dwarf fortress, but when I get a king he instantly becomes the commander of my military and is sent to fend of sieges and kill diplomats and the likes, so I dunno.
King: A noble, probably cowering on a throne. *-* Depending on how I do it, might make the kind a good fighter, but due to the nature of chess, this actually sounds like a good and funny idea :D

As a further reminder to ideas: I have to carve this out of wax and then cast it in pewter/similar metal. Things with spindly legs (even though I love cave spiders) will be very difficult, and if the goblin king has flames I may have to cast him upside-down D:

-Hate to double post but that was too many edits and I felt this deserved its own post-

Alright, so I've decided what I'm going to do for each piece and the thread shall now show my progress and sketches and the likes. I will also keep a spoiler on the main post to hold all sketches and photos!

So, for the dwarves:
King - A cowering noble (possibly behind a throne), fancy clothes and a crown. No weapon for him!
Queen - A bad-ass warrior with dual battle axes, and really elaborate armor decorations.
Rook - (due to size restrictions and such) Two heavily armored dwarves, one holding a large war axe and the other holding a large war hammer with, no shields.
Bishop - Two killed female warriors (possibly w/ baby-in-hand), respective female features (and possibly a beard!) Probably getting some form of hammer.
Knight - (due to size restrictions and the likes) Two marksdwarves (I figured this was appropriate because of how far and awkwardly they can move). They get crossbows (obviously).
Pawn - Generic warriors, varying weapons, basic armor. I'll probably throw up a few more concepts on them soon.

For the goblins:
King - A fire demon, perhaps holding some sort of orb in front of him, looking all scary and stuff, flames everywhere! No weapon, he's a demon!
Queen - Goblin law giver, probably a lasher due to lashers being the DF equivalent to the Sith.
Rook - Two trolls, different styles of loincloth and random pieces of armor on each. These concepts will be fun! This is also more of a Tolkien and/or Harry Potter style troll, not the WoW style ones. Big, crazy, not furry despite what DF says... They may either hold a club, a rock, or just fight with their bare hands!
Bishop - Baby snatchers! They're sneaky and devious and I really likes the ideas. Both will look kind of like ring-wraiths I imagine, kind of hooded and dark, maybe a nose sticking out of the hood because goblins have weird noses right? They can get a dagger or shortish sword.
Knight - A bow goblin (sorry again about no mounts... it's just it really would look weird). Bows for all!
Pawn- Again, generic warriors with varying weapons and basic armor, possibly not very much armor at all. Going to try for a concept of a goblin tonight!

And again, scourges, maces and pikes/spears will all be goblin weapons, and axes, hammers and crossbows will be dwarven. Swords can be used by either!

Oh yeah, and thanks to everyone for giving me ideas and being supportive, if this project ever gets finished, you'll all be mentioned!

Pawns should be unarmoured miners in my opinion.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

Well I'm not sure how soon I will be able to get pictures up as I have lots to do recently... Uhm, whenever I get a decent amount of work done I'll bump the post back up I suppose. For now, sorry for the wait :/

I felt a bit inspired by the thread, and considering I used to do some "okay" clay pieces, so I decided to try and sculpt out how a dwarf chess pawn could look:

I realized how freaking hard it is, and that I have forgotten all about sculpting. I really need to get into it again.

It is in fact a 3d model. I am sorry I did not state so in the post.
