It has been suggested no less than two hundred times.

Integrated 3D graphics are frequently suggested.  Please search before posting.

This is easy to find information :d

Also, what do you mean by the 4 version, or sprites?

It kind of sounds like you are talking about a third-party visualizer (probably Stonesense? Isometric view, and the only visualizer I'm aware of that's somewhat kept up to date) as if it was part of Dwarf Fortress proper. It isn't (no matter which one you're actually using). In case you are talking about Stonesense, I seem to remember that the devs of that program didn't want to create an alternate user interface to DF proper.

3d DF, as noted, has been suggested several times, but such a suggestion faces significant hurdles. An official isometric view as per Stonesense may be easier to implement, but it also faces the lack of proper graphics.

The creators of Dwarf Fortress (Tarn and Zach Adams, a.k.a. Bay 12 Games) don't make sprites.  There are no current plans to add 3D graphics, although full 2D sprite graphics may get support in the next few years or so.

There was an experimental 3D-ish view in... version 40d, wasn't it?  Not there in .31/DF2010, though.  But (and not everyone agrees on this approach, but I think most people accept the decision, or at least work within it without much of a grumble) the development team (or, by another count, individual) is concentrating upon content, mechanics, flavour, etc, as a priority over 'mere' aesthetics.

You know The Matrix?  You know how a skilled Operator can 'see through the code' to the woman in the red dress?  Well, it's not anything like as hard as that appears to be to get a decent mental 3D image from the 'raw' (or alternate tilesetted) 2D slices of your Fortress.  In fact, I would imagine that this is as good (or better) as one of those mental-workout things they keep putting on gameboy-type things, but with much more entertainment.  And it's just like how you get to Carnegie Hall...  Practice!

You wouldn't rush Goya or Faulkner or Tarantino. Think about Toady as equal to those artists. And then deal with it.

No, it was in DF itself. It was removed for the 31.01 release at the latest (possibly earlier). It was rather barebones, really.

Yep, smooth vector-shaded monochrome polygons representing horizontal surfaces of various kinds (maybe ramps?, maybe not) and it was nice, but incomplete.  Nothing like Stonesense.  Plus it wasn't realtime (IIRC), but everything was paused.  Plus no attempt to put any textures, sprites or anything else to indicate things (and beings) upon the structure.

Still, I liked it.  It gave some sense of perspective (almost literally!).  But I'm sure even without it I would have attained my current Zen-like ability to mentally picture the 3D landscape from successively viewing the various 2D slices and layers...  And I think the OP will be able to, also, once he gets some practice in.

The Stonesense thread is here.  You should probably take these questions there.

But seriously, this has been so overly suggested it gets annoying.  Give the poor amphibian a break!
