I think I've found the future processor for my DIY Music Synthesizer... It even has an audio out jack built in. :3

Now to learn how to program for Linux...
you might want to use the hdmi cable for best audio.

If I owned my own house, I would probably have one of these in every room hooked up to a 3 inch touch screen instead of light switches for full house automation.

:) sounds awesome
only problem might be finding the touchscreens... did a search the other day for such a thing with very little luck... the keyword 'touchscreen' seems to pull up almost exclusively tablets and phones...
....
You can afford to spend >50§ per lightswitch?

Full home automation is a luxury. And it is  50§ per room rather than per lightswitch. A lot of rooms will have more than one switch, but only need one smart interface.

If I were going to use the digital data, yes. I'll be running the 3.5mm jack into a 1/4" TRS converter, and running it out as analogue signal so I can plug it through outboard effects. Then I'll plug that analogue signal back into the digital domain for additional editing.

This is unfortunately what I call fun.

The other nice thing is you can also use it to run things like aircon and other powered devices (with computer controlled relays (the r pi comes with some connections for this type of thing)). You could also stick media clients on them and use them to control built in room speakers for each room each connected to a single central media server (all available as open source programs). Hook it all up to web based control software and you have a pretty neat house. Most expensive thing would probably be the wiring :P

edited for some clarity and spelling.

I would like to point out that given the current economic climate, it's not too far fetched that (expensive) computers will become more of a luxury.

Probably. Though at less than the cost of a typical date, the raspberry pi is hardly an expensive computer.

Well, I'm definitely forking out for one of those. A version with a VGA port instead of one of the existing video connections would be nice though; a secondhand flatscreen monitor can be had for $30, but an equivalent TV set is several times that.

EDIT: Never mind, according to the forum they're ahead of me on that.

That was my point.

I'd buy one. Okay, maybe 2, probably 3. I hope I've passed on my programming genes...

BTW: it probably can't run Dwarf Fortress, but I'd not be surprised if it could run Dosbox. There's already an android port of the thing, and the games I tried on my tablet work (interface is horrible though)

I'm sure you could install DOSBox on one without too much trouble, but whether it would be very useable is a whole different question.
