My piles have a ridiculous amount of refuse that I want to get rid of.

I made a magma pit to dump goblins into, but I can't seem to figure out how to dump my refuse into the magma.

Do I designate a refuse pile over a tile of magma? put a floor hatch over it? make it a pit or garbage dump? I can't figure it out.

Designate a garbage dump zone adjacent to your pit (magma-filled or otherwise), then mark your non-magma-safe waste for dumping.

The dwarves will then lob it over the edge of the pit.

Be careful that a) you haven't marked anything valuable to dump in a quantum stockpile, and b) you have no other active dump zones that will accumulate unwanted rubbish.

This trick can be used for other things too, for instance whilst I had 2 miners channeling out a deep cistern I used this to toss food and drink down to them.

Or just have a floor hatch/bridge over your magma so you can screen out anything valuable before you dump them.

If your magma pit descends all the way down to the bottom of the magma sea, then you don't even need to sort out the goods - when an object hits a "magma flow" tile, it's just like it fell into a chasm.
