Cannot build pump on constructed floor
« on: February 17, 2008, 02:22:00 pm »

I can't construct a screwpump on floor that was built (b-C-f) over a channel. It says "building present"(indeed, the floor tile). But without the floor I can't construct either since it's a channel.

Currently you can't build two constructions on one tile, even if one construction is floor.  I imagine that may change at some point in the future, but for now it's a feature, not a bug.

If software was real world, then it'd be something equivalent of hitting a nail with a hammer and having a building collapse on the other side of town.

Don't worry people, sometimes -moments occur

I think screw pumps are a type of building, not a construction. I've been building screw pumps on constructed floors for a long time. I just tested it in 176.38a, and it works there, too.

Are you sure there's nothing else on the floor tiles, such as a stockpile?

Two things can be going on: (1) the floor isn't complete yet -- is it suspended?  (2) Known bug with pathing; save and reload, and it will be fixed.

You may be thinking of constructed walls on the level below.

I build screwpumps on floors all the time.  The construction / building distinction is correct.  Screwpumps work in 176.38a exactly as they did in 33g.

*Tests*
When did floors cease being buildings?  I've been reading the dev logs...

You can build *beds* and other furniture and buildings on the constructed floor. You can designate stockpiles on constructed floors. You can't have another rewall/refloor above it, but that's about it for limitations.

Yes, so I realized.  The question was not in fact "what can you build on a floor?" was was "when did it happen?"

Since ever, I think. You couldn't construct stuff on constructed floors, but you could place furniture and stuff. I mean, the two-story human houses wouldn't be possible if building on refloors were impossible.

Hm.  I must not have ever had a need to build things on floors and thus never tried.
