Drowning Suicidally...
« on: May 23, 2008, 05:18:00 pm »

So, uhh, not sure if this should go here, but I imagine it would... First post, by the way.

Now, this may have been mentioned before, but here's the predicament: One of my Dwarves fell into a strange mood, secretive if that really matters. So, anyways, I couldn't supply him with the materials he needed so went off and jumped into my moat. Now, my moat's water was 3/7 or 4/7, so he just kinda waded there rather than sticking his head under water.

So, I had a Dwarf in my moat for a couple seasons before he died of thirst, kind of ironic, and now all that's left are his bones... But still, I found it kind of buggy that he couldn't drown himself in the moat.

So, was this the right section...?

A Dwarf who wants to drown himself should not be throwing himself into a shallow pond.

Well, I was just thinking that shouldn't they get it fixed so that Dwarves (Dwarfs?) should only attempt to drown themselves in pools deeper than 5/7?

This is true.

Alternatively, the dwarf could just force his head underwater and stay there. You can drown in a bucket if you try hard enough.

Unless you've got massive willpower, your body would have an automatic "Pull head out of water" reaction to you trying to kill yourself in about 3-4 feet of water.

Thats why you tie boulders your your arms, legs and head.

Would be interesting, if drowning attempts tried to use stones.

Urist McEmo: Like isn't worth anything anymore. I'll kill myself.
*Grabs stone, jumps*
Urist: Wait a second... this is Adamantine! It floats! Why the heck was adamantine just lying around in a hallway?

Kogan McBartender: So, what were you doing before the drink?
Olan McHauler: Eh, hauling stones. Light ones, too.

I personally don't see it as a bug...

The Dwarf was obviously downright insane and would stay in that pond however long it takes for him to drown.

I see what he's driving at, if a dwarf wants to kill himself then they should go into water deep enough to drown in.

Was there any water deep enough to drown in?

Also if he wanted to, could he get out of the moat?

*Late Reply*

Well, yeah. There was a few nearby 7/7 lakes, and a brook too.

But he went for the moat.

Could he get out of the moat?

If he couldn't then he could have actually done a suicide drop and got stuck.

I'm not sure, but I'm thinking no. I had a bridge, shouldn't he have used that by default anyways?

Sometimes when a Dwarf goes mad... apperantly they will try to jump from heights (they don't need a bridge) and will do so until they die

So the Dwarf may have not been trying to drown himself, he could have been trying to plunge to his death.

Edit change note: I turned "No" into "Not"... as No seems like I was calling the TC stupid or that I am stupid "So the Dwarf may no been trying to drown himselff

Something similar happened to me, once.

A dwarf who couldn't do a strange mood tried jumping in my moat, but it was still in the process of being filled up using a pump, so he just stayed in there waiting for it to fill up. There were staircases, so he wasn't stuck, and there were murky pools and a river nearby.

By the time he died, he was a competent swimmer...

EDIT: Was a river, not brook
