Man of SCIENCE! - an attempted revival by me.
« on: January 10, 2012, 10:05:03 pm »

It's that time again... that time of science. I've tried to get this game to work on a few other forums but... yeah. Failure. Cue twenty-two posts going "I DUNT GET IT." Let me lay down a few ground rules:

You get to choose a primary knowledge, in which you start with 3.00 in, a secondary knowledge, in which you start with 2.00, and two books, which for all intents and purposes give you 1.00 in the knowledge that the book possesses. The books are, however, useless if you actually get past 1.00 in that knowledge. (yes, the same as Pandarsenic's. If it's not broken, don't fix it. I'll also be using whatever science-descriptions he's already typed up, as they were quite darn good. Of course, if he doesn't want me to use anything like that, I'll abide.)

Various forum-goers suggest different things to do. ALL THINGS MUST BE SUGGESTED IN CODE FORMAT, like this: (although you can talk and suggest sciences and such without diddle-dallying with this format.) This is to make it so that it doesn't get off-topic or somesuch quickly and turn into a spamfest of confusion, which seemed to be a problem in the earlier game.

- Research rats (0)
- Grow mold (0)
- Study programming (0)
- Create Killbot (0)

and so on. The brackets contain votes. If you want the scientist to do something, increase the number by the action. If you want to add an action, just add it in. All ideas that get to [2] (to start with) will be done by the scientist, so for example if two people vote to Research rats, then the scientist will research rats. If you do not suggest something in that format, then your suggestion will be IGNORED. This is for the sake of making sense and not getting carried away and such.
Certain actions need certain amounts of skill to do. For example, creating a robot will need high ROBOTICS skill as well as high (If you want it to be A.I. controlled) PROGRAMMING skill. Creating mutant ant-sharks will need high BIOLOGY skill. Creating an army of the undead will require high ECTOBIOLOGY skill, and so on.

You start with parts and chemicals (If you have chosen chemistry). The parts and chemicals that you start with depend on the SCIENCES that you choose to start with.

The sciences are:
ROBOTICS
PROGRAMMING
WAVE-LENGTHS
BIOLOGY
ECTOBIOLOGY
PHYSICS
CHEMISTRY
NUCLEAR SCIENCE/ATOMICS
MAGNETIC
QUANTUM PARTICLES/PHYSICS

And many possible more, providing you guys come up with some. So, let's begin and hope we shall get this a bit more ironed out, shall we? (I'm also considering making it so that you can have 3 sciences)

---+++---

You are a man of SCIENCE, and you are in your lab... if you could call it a lab. It's actually the medium-sized basement of a ratty apartment complex in the slums. You've just finished setting everything up, what little it is.

Your mind switches back to your life before this. Your life at the university. Those bastards did not deserve of your genius. Your genius in... what was it you were good at again?

[Yes, suggest the sciences you know in the code format, please. And yes, you can ask for descriptions of the various sciences]

as you can see, quite similar to how Pandarsenic's was. Again, I hope he is not offended by this. Either way, I hope we see great science-y related things happening to this thread!

It appears that Chemistry reached (2) first... and to be honest I'm not quite sure what Mathematics could be. Perhaps... some kind of SUPER PHYSICS?

WAVE-LENGTHS concern the study of the electromagnetic spectrum, and waves and wave-lengths in general. Whether it be involving Transverse/Electromagnetic Waves or Longitudinal waves, you've got it all. WAVE-LENGTHS mostly requires parts, but you some chemicals may alter waves in certain specific ways,  creating new, different types of WAVE-LENGTH weapons. Many of the parts involved will be things like mirrors, prisms, radio dishes, and all other things used to deflect, reflect, refract, and diffract different waves. The labs required by WAVE-LENGTHS start off quite simple at first. A method to bend light, produce sound, influence various types of waves, and a way to direct that energy, and you're good. However, the most complex lab required, while not as complex as ROBOTICS, is still quite up there. The methods to produce different types of waves,  as well as the required equipment to harness them are all very important and sometimes hard to find.

The advantages and possible utility of WAVE-LENGTHS is quite respectable. At the lower levels, you can use concussive blasts of sound to knock people out, carefully alter radio waves and broadcasts, or increase the potential of some explosives by tinkering with the pressure-waves that they produce. At higher levels, WAVE-LENGTHS can let you bend light to hide various sized objects, create a giant EMP to fry all electronics for miles around (yours too, unless you shield them!), or utilize ultra-violet rays to violently mutate a persons genetic structure. The main advantage of WAVE-LENGTHS is the wide range of utility you can use the various waves for. I mean, NUCLEAR SCIENCE lets you destroy cities in an instant, but does it let you create your own specialized microwave to get your coffee just how you like it? The disadvantages of WAVE-LENGTHS include the fairly expensive costs of producing the upper-level weapons and tools, and the extreme adaptability of WAVE-LENGTHS. If the enemy somehow acquires one of your WAVE-LENGTH mechanisms, they can create super-specialized armor that renders your weapons quite weak, or they could even possibly create their own weapons or devices that send your destructive waves right back at you! The moral-impact of WAVE-LENGTHS also starts out fairly large, but quickly goes down (although utilizing different kinds of waves means kind of resetting the moral.)

Ah, yes, CHEMISTRY! THAT kind of genius! THE GENIUS OF CHEMICALS AND ELEMENTS! You burst into a cackling laugh before degenerating into a shaking cough. Too bad you can't afford cough drops... but that will change!

You sew your crude ~*CERTIFIED CHEMIST*~ ribbon onto your labcoat. You have to give it to yourself, stealing from those second-graders was a great idea, particularly because it gave you all that nice cloth with which to make your ribbons. You reach over for your second ribbon and pick it up, but you're having trouble reading what it says... what does it say again?

and with lots for biology...

OF COURSE! How could you have forgotten? The wonderful, terrifying darling of mad scientists everywhere: Biology! You carefully examine your  ~*CERTIFIED BIOLOGIST*~ ribbon with pride. Of course, it's the same as your chemist ribbon but... it's still special, of course!

You think for a moment, before nodding. Yes, your books of SCIENCE. Where did you put them again? You walk over to your old desk and open the drawer, finding two books that say...

so, I wonder which books? I have a description for QUANTUM PARTICLES already typed up. WAVE-LENGTHS is basically an improved LAZORS, and Magnetic is... actually not too sure what it could be.

Interesting... those are both sciences that I could see use for, but personally fail to grasp the 'big' picture. I mean, I'd like each science to have a decent bit of uses, instead of 'finding things' or 'convincing people.' Perhaps Psychology could just be a facet of biology, or some such.
