Any way to shatter it upon impact?

No. The dwarf will probably disassemble a construction, the 'door', to get out and start a massacre.

If the dwarves are likely to die, take the dwarves and the pods and drop them both seperately anyway.
For more damage.

Wait, how would you get the dwarf in the cage in the first place?

Question: Why does a Dwarf need to be inside? Falling Rocks of Doom caused to 'Collapse' down would be devestating enough, I think.

Frankly, if you've got the infrastructure and the patience to fill a long cylinder with water like that then you might as well cut out the middleman and just drive the goblins off with water pressure.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

IIRC, the same way you get a FB into a cage.

if without modding, this can be accomplished by accuratelly dropping your dwarves on top of enemy goblins. If there are not enough goblins down there, first triiger a doberman bomb or an kitten bomb via an airlock system. (in this case it's more of a "kitten airbag"), then land your troopers on the kittens.
Oh wait you could just release your dwarves through the airlock system, but there's no Orbital Shock in such a solution, yeah?

Water works with enough of it.

I think this is the 3rd topic about this that I had to squash the myth that water doesn't project falling dwarves. I have a pet peeve about bad dwarf science :(

The second comment on that movie nearly made me blast my coffee all over my monitor and keyboard:

Oh, spambot.

Edit: Also, wow, that is a LOT of dead trolls. Impressive.

Anyone remember the Squats with their battle bikes and power armour that made them look like enraged Mr. Potato Heads?

My first thought after your post: "Trolls!?! HERE?!?! What is this world coming to?"

Then I realized...

Drop pods would be infeasible, drop chutes on the other hand...

Or just simple tactical bombardment. We'll have to wait a long time for proper strategic bombardment though...

Drop chutes with live ammunition > Orbital bombardment. Unless that's a lot of orbital bombardment.

Couldn't you just drop the pods on goblins without anyone inside them?

Oh well, I guess it might still be fun to test on nobles (If the fall doesn't kill them, they drown. If they manage to swim to safety, the siege is there to correct the problem... It lacks magma, though  :P).

That too. That's always an option.

EDIT: What if the dwarves were caged (somehow) while they were dropped? If you can survive drowning in one, why not a fall?

Then they'd be stuck in a cage though.
