[176.38a] stuck marksdwarves
« on: February 17, 2008, 02:21:00 am »

I'm facing a siege, 20-odd gobbos outside.

My marksdwarves rained terror on them, but now their quivers are empty.  And they're just standing there.  On a bolt stockpile.  They are hungry, thirsty, and tired.  But they're not moving.  I told them to stand down, and they're still not moving.

I've never seen this before -- not even with these specific dwarves.  Repros after a reload, so I can send the save in if need be.

000032 □ [dwarf mode][combat]   when an archer is far from a fortification and fails a shot-line test, their brains turn off

Bug 32, according to Toady.  Same thing happened to me.  'Twas quite annoying.  It's the army arc, though, so this should be fixed sometime soon.

I'm sure a save/screenshot  would help, but I just have to ask the stupid question: Are you sure there's not a locked door or some obvious obstruction to prevent them from standing down?

(ah, of course, as I wrote that Puzzlemaker posted the apparent bug  :) )

Maybe, but my dwarves are immediately adjacent to the fortifications; the farthest is exactly one tile off.  Workaround is, what, dump them from the military and re-draft them?

Im a couple of versions behind at the moment, but in 33g you could put them in a squad based elsewhere and they will move to their commander. Once they are out of LOS you can set them back to their combat post and they will restock on bolts before returning to position.

(Hoping edits dont necro the thread)
Having tried this more recently, it hasnt seemed to work. Just a note for anyone searching on the problem...

I just had some trouble with my dwarves during an ambush because of the "dwarves stay indoors" order (menu {o}).

In turned it to allow only military outside, and the civilians on the surface, instead of running inside, just sat there like sitting ducks and got sliced by the gobboes.

As soon as I allowed all dwarves to go outside, sittings ducks started to move again.

(Dorf that was a slaughter. One should patrol and clean the land of ambushes before immigration waves, since three gobbo squads waiting for bearded buggers to come mean a lot of blood for nothing.    :D )

Did you issue an "all dwarves stay inside" order ?

If it only affects marksdwarves, maybe you could switch their weapon type?

I'll have to try that next siege.  Draft/undraft worked, so I set the one sniper without a civilian job to go engrave for a bit, but just mucking with leadership is better.  Changing weapons is another interesting suggestion.

They seem to do better now that I removed the wall the goblins were huddling behind, so I bet this is indeed the LOS/brainless bug.  If so, the bug report is buggy: distance from the fortification is irrelevant.
