Plea for Help!
« on: January 07, 2012, 05:00:27 pm »

Greetings my most treasured and valued friends. I have been away a long time, you know how life goes sometimes you've got a lot of free time and energy and sometimes the only free time you've got alone to yourself is when you're asleep or taking a shower or other bathroom activities. I want to start making more free time for myself. I need to flex my mind because I feel it slowly dieing from under usage ( I use it, don't get me wrong, but not for anything creative or imaginative)

I've got a couple of questions I'd like a little feedback on. Any help or comments would be welcome :) Even if they are to say "GO AWAY WE DON'T WANT YOU BACK HERE!"

#1 - I want to be able to work on my story any where I am. Are there any solutions that you guys are aware of that allow you to work online with a text editor comparable to Word 2010 that store your work in a cloud type situation. I've heard google docs is like that but I've never used it before, is it as powerful as word ? MY goal is to be able to work on my story any where I may be on any computer I may have access to at the time. I'm also going to be picking up a netbook with my tax return so I can take it with me. My main problem writing stories in the past have been trying to find alone time with my home PC where all my work was stored (Also I used to write at work but they blocked this website and sent me a warning e-mail. I don't know if you've read my story but that little part about Armok sitting on a throne of souls kind of pissed off my companies IT guy, I violated about every policy we have with that one)

#2 I'm going to start a new story. I was thinking of telling the story of the founding of the goblin fortress mentioned in my first story and go through their history with extreme detail leading up to the point where they go to war with Clan Stonemane. I want to attempt to make my writing more mature and less , uh , not mature ? :P (I'm off to a terrible start damn it!) Is there anything else you might suggest I start off with? Once I get back into the flow what I'd really like to do is edit my original story, correct mistakes but keep the story over all the same. Then once I've done that go back to the point just after the battle with the goblins and undo my cop out where I rush to the end of the story and fill in the blanks (I know that pissed a lot of people off)

any thoughts?

Yes, you should try Google Docs.  It'll take less time than typing that paragraph did.

I guess what I was asking if goggle docs is the only thing out there like that, and if it is the best. I guess it can't hurt to give it a try eh?

1: Google Docs is exactly what you want. I think it's the only one, although there might be some obscure knock-off. It's the one everybody uses, so it's probably reasonable to assume it's the best.

Google Docs isn't the only thing that does this.  But it's one of the best.  Do yourself a favor, though, and backup stuff somewhere once every couple weeks or so.  Things don't go wrong often with Google, but when they do...well, people have lost half their lives to that.  Glad it's working out well for you, though.  Good luck and welcome back.

I still trying to romance my wife into letting me get a cheap acer netbook "for school" ;P I got this laptop so I could spend more time writing but she stole it from me to play TF2 and get on facebook. Anytime I ask for it she gives me the look :P I have to wait until she goes to bed to get any quality time in and I'm getting too old to stay up very late. I can do it for a few nights but after a while I need 12 hours of sleep to catch up

Assuming you can tolerate it, smart phones should be capable of interfacing with Google Docs.  Android OS phones tend to come with the app.

It's works very well for what I need, so long as I have internet access I suppose. I wonder if there is any way to get it to auto sync with a file on your hard drive so that if you lose connection you can keep working on your paper and the next time you get connection it updates the online version with the one you've been working on?

I really like the way it is constantly saving your work, makes it a lot easier to just write and then walk away if something comes up don't have to worry about anyone closing my window without saving my work.

I've got some good ideas formulating for an epic tale of slavery, love, betrayal, and slowly creeping insanity.

Apparently, yes.  Google Docs help documentation shows a whole section on Working Offline.  Here's the page on syncing documents offline.

Dropbox could also work

I thought about suggesting Dropbox earlier, but I felt it didn't match the criteria the OP asked for, namely his desire for an online text editing environment.  Dropbox would necessitate a local text editing environment.

Wow, really? My wife gives me a look too, but only because "we are grown up men not suitable for games and childish entertainment". To play TF2? Wow...

Yah I got lucky my wife love's video games but only certain types. She plays the hell out of some skyrim but when she sees dwarf fortress she only sees the symbols and not the story they are telling. Sad really :)
