If I were to get a tattoo, it'd be very small and particularly discrete. Possibly an interesting geometric design.

My step-mum has a really nice tattoo on her wrist of both of the names of both of her children, which I really like. What I really DISlike is when people tattoo the name of their significant other on their bodies, because from what I've seen this is like a massive sign to fate saying, "Break us up any way you can!"

That's precisely why I asked the wife not to do that. Our daughter's name was fine, but she'll always be a daughter, no matter what. If the wife up and throws me out, otoh...yeah. I'd rather not tempt fate.

The ancient Scythians tattooed themselves, and were badass awesome people from Eurasia.  Apparently they've found some preserved mummies with the ink still in their skin after about 2000 years.
