Erithish, the fortress that killed me.
« on: January 07, 2012, 01:52:47 pm »

Welcome all to this forgotten legacy. I have decided to forget any feelings of doubt in how this shall live at all, or how anyone would think of it, and begin to create. I decided to make a community fortress with my limited knowledge of it all. No mods at all will be used here, and savescumming is to a minimum (i intend that as long as the fort survives, I do not savescum.  I intend to keep the fort alive for as long as possible, and openly accept and ideas and help.) The main savescumming will be to actually establish this base, and not let it die horribly. I will not revert to a previous save if the fortress dies in a glorious burst of amazing.  A little problem of my computer is that it rarely corrupts save files for fortresses, so I'll have a few backup (maybe a lot, if this survives) saves set up to preserve the fortress.  So, start claiming the beginning dwarves, all I claim for personal use is the expedition leader. the first dwarves will probably keep their jobs (except fishers, they'll become a miner and a hunter, if provided.) (I'll use play now option) so, without further ado, I present the introduction.

Welcome all to my story, well, my fortress' story. First, let me introduce myself, my name is Kellit (made the name up, nothing in dwarven) Isonineth, and I am dead.  You may ask "Well, how are you talking to me then?" You see, I made a deal with Armok since he loved all the blood I accidentally made for him. So I could relay tales of this fortress, as long as you recognize that Armok himself made this all possible. Thank him and all that for what he's done, yadda yadda yadda, now it is my time to relay the information, and I shall do so as if I'm living through it...

Ok, our king is mad, freaking mad.  Our situation is seriously screwed up. Our civilization, 'The Diamond Orb' has been at war for quite some time. With who you may ask? Everyone. Just freaking everyone. except this one area, because we haven't yet poked our noses in and killed a few royalty and diplomats. It isn't our fault, it just kinda- ok it's entirely our fault. We're at an uneasy peace with humans throughout the globe, but goblins hate us, literally every goblin civilization hates us, and is at all out war. EVERY goblin civilization. Even in this area me and six others are going to,goblins are at war. Our main war is to the North, with all of those tree hugging elves. about two of their groups have banded together against The Diamond Orb. Right in the middle of a haunted jungle, also bordering a sinister jungle, where our lovely civilization was founded. and only expanded, somehow, despite the dark fortresses littering the area.  They figured that this is the perfect time to send an expedition,to gain wealth and power for the king. hah, like that will ever happen.

Let's explain the situation of this outpost location. First, there are two mountain ranges, the young horns, and the purged spines, running parallel to each other. with a very tight mountain pass between them. on one end of the pass the mountains open up for a cluster of human towns. On the other end, it stays narrow, widening slightly to allow a single mountain, surrounded by 'the circumstantial jungles' which is a jungle, flooded with elven forest retreats. Which of course, we aren't officially at war with here, but they hate us either way. This mountain has extremely high cliffs, some dwarves decided to rank them seven out of ten at the highest, and five out of ten at the very lowest while they mapped the area. the jungle around this area is calm, but the mountain is sinister. A little tiny blip. the only blip on this half of the mountain range, which contains most of the entire world. on the other side of the purged spines, our civilization thrives. here, we have no foothold, except the goblin war.

Did I mention this mountain's name? The Grisly Tower. Isn't that dandy?

Now guess where our wonderful outpost is. It might be hard, but give a guess, in the wonderfully peaceful Elder beak mountain range to the south, rich with metals and no war? our homeland, where despite the danger, we have reinforcements? Nope, not at all.
"The elder beaks have been settled in too much" they say. "Bah" I say, "flux stone! and deep metals! Right in this mountain!" they say. and that pretty much turned over our wondrous king to this place, and ordered me to go here, with only six others. There's also some shallow metal apparently, just one. one freaking shallow metal. That deep metal better be great, or else I'm going to kill someone.  I'm probably going to kill someone anyway.

did I mention the only reason I was chosen to lead this expedition was because my last name meant plancities?

Now, how did I die? Well, I'll explain that as it happens in the story. Trust me, it's great.
that's all i can say for now, I'll be waiting.

Dwarves:

______ Godenkekath "tundrarope" woodworker
Kroz Gulnaszefon "islandfountain" woodcutter -me (plan to do stuff with him, or not.)
Winterdirge Koganerith "boatslabors" stoneworker -Iamanelfcollaborator
______ Sibrekom "salvecrushed" jeweler
______ Midorast "powersabre" fish cleaner, to be hunter
Pasta Anamushat "Agedbasement" Fisherdwarf, to be assistant miner -Spaghetti7
That siege operator
That useless craftsdwarf married to the armorer (siege operator)
That bowyer who I appointed to militia commander because she is good with axes
Various others who have not yet come/ I was too lazy to post about

I myself am the resident miner, a trade I learned when I was young. ah, I remember those days... well, that's that. just remember, I'm still telling this as if it happened. Oh, the joy of reliving these events, eh, I can't call it joy. I'd rather call it just a legacy, if that's alright with you.

I only change the first name. Go cry about it.

You may have notice that I write this as it goes.

Anyway, I'll get the first post up once a few people have joined, either all spots are filled or I just move on after one day. one of the two. So, enjoy yourselves and laugh, or not, I really don't care if you do. So, off to the legacy!

I'll take a Male, and be in the military as a axelord (train to be one of course) Hugo, the Drunk Defender

As long as he survives that's fine, I'd just rather have the first 7 dwarves be what their professions say. The next male dwarf who comes along unclaimed with any skill in axes I'll give him to you.

Rename Koganeirth to Winterdirge and i'll take him. When you set up the military equipment and such, I'll join as a hammerdwarf.
Hugo the Drunk Defender and Winterdirge the Howling Wind. :P

excuse my clue-lessness, but what do you mean by rename him winterdirge, like, first name as that? heheh, just a bit confused. I actually could find a dwarf with axe skill now and name him hugo, and only make him militia once a few more dwarves come. Don't worry, militia will be needed. Right when I was examining the world, I forgot to pause and some zombie hoary marmots were frolicking on the mountain, not attacking anyone, but what about zombie yaks? exactly.

Well, I honestly expected about this many people to join in at this point. I suppose I should get to work on the first month (I plan on doing this in one month (in game) intervals, unless something spectacular happens. Then I'll post that update. I'm also giving the starting dwarves unique names, since they are remotely special.

If you could give Anamushat the first name "Pasta", I would be happy to have him.

As long as he isn't killed in a cave-in.
Or in a carp's mouth.
Or on a spear.
Or under a bridge.
Or in a sea of fire.
Or...
Yeah.

The likelihood is he'll be crushed in a cave in after being eaten by a speared magma carp under a bridge.

Bloody Dwarf Fortress. Just when you think you know how to play it'll throw a pointy fish at you followed by fire and rocks.
And monkeys.

Probably.
Also, you may want to edit the main post, to show the ones who have been sentenced to a long and painful death at the mouths of face-eating goats taken.

I'm just about to start with this nightmare, just fling out a few suggestions or ideas, and comments. I'll make sure to forget take them into consideration/care.

by the way, pasta is a girl.

and Winterdike is perfect for a hammerdwarf. "He is mighty, but he is susceptible to disease and easy to tire." and his interests include iron and warhammers (as well as amethyst men for their rockyness)

Erithish, how it began
« Reply #14 on: January 08, 2012, 08:29:16 pm »

Erithish
Granite 1st, 551

We’ve arrived at the location today. I didn’t even bother to learn anyone’s name on the trip here. I should probably get to that.

When I saw the mountain, I almost burst with glee. I could even smell it. The single ore was native silver, pure native silver! Not just that, but I could see in the mountainside: opals! Those are really expensive! Rose quartz too, but claro opals! No wonder they sent us here, there is riches to be found!
Strike the earth!

Some Moose were wandering around in the jungle nearby, I saw them myself, but they stayed away from the mountain. I wonder why…

19th Granite
All of the moose suddenly booked it completely out of the area as quickly as their legs could take them. I was put off by this, but paid it no mind. Until of course, our woodcutter, last name Gulnaszefon, first name nothing I cared about, sprinted over to me as I was mining, he was all out panicking.
“Calm down, will ya?”
“Can’t” he said, gasping for air. “We gotta hurry.”
“Why?”
“Hoary marmots.”
“Hah, is that all? I thought we were dwarves, not pansies.”
“You don’t understand, one looked at me,”
“Is that all?” How are we supposed to work fearlessly if he freaks out over hoary marmots. How do we expect to work in a sinister mount- oh…
“And its eye fell out.”
“Get everyone inside. And build a drawbridge, fast.”

The battle of the Marmots. 3rd Slate
We were trying to hurry with our constructions, when the beasts struck.  Two skeletal marmots and one zombie marmot. They careened in, one skeletal marmot is chasing a cat into the wilderness, the other skeletal marmot perched into our dismembered wagon, while supplies were still being unloaded. The last zombie marmot hopped onto our entrance, waiting.
“Charge!” I shout.
We rushed in, ripping the weak thing apart with our bare hands, I had a pick myself. I love the feeling of tearing bones apart. I sprinted forward, to save our lovely cat. It was fighting back, biting the bones on the beast, until we rushed in and saved its broken body. The zombie, that’s easy. Quite quickly, axes tore through it’s rotten flesh, killing it fairly quickly. The battle was won.
But not over. As soon as the last marmot fell, a goat, made of bones crawled over the peak, we shall wait and see what it does.
Oh yeah, and our cat is half dead and lying in the middle of a field. Those biscuits will be delicious.

4th Slate
Our jeweler is now an honorary engineer, not officially, but still an engineer.

14th slate
Me and Winterdirge trotted off into the wilds, and before I even got to the goat, winterdirge punched it to death, barehanded. I think he’ll end up being helpful in the future.
but Yak came. Yak are big, and big things hurt. I hid everyone inside, and they chased some fox, unfortunately the majority of people were crying about the cat, and how it would die if they didn’t give it water. I didn’t understand their concern, but let the nut-jobs out anyway. The worst part? None even gave the cat some friggin water. It just kinda limped around.  Those Yaks though… I stationed everyone with military orders, prepare for a fight, I don’t like the looks of those yak.

5th Felsite
The Yaks finally left. I don’t know why, but I had nightmares, each time they made glorious paintings for Armok, and glorious they were…

17th Felsite
Since the Yak wandered off, no undead have come so far. Only a fox roams and a moose lurks.  On another note, the Jeweler was ecstatic when we finally made him stop making mechanisms, and started making him cut claro opals. We have been mining out rooms and offices at the time, and ever five feet we come across a cluster of claro opals. So he’s occupied. Since I need someone to crunch numbers, I sent that Powersabre dwarf to rot her mind with that, as well as taking over as the mechanic.

25th Felsite
Dig dig diggy, diggy dig dig dig. Diggity dig dig dig. Dig dig.

The day of 27th Felsite
“The Yak have come again! To battle stations! Protect the fortress!”
“Sir?”
“Yes winterdirge? What do you have to ask before we lock up?”
“These are regular yak, you know, the living kind.”
“…” A grin spread very far across my face, devilish in every way. “Dirge, have you ever tasted yak before?”
“No sir.”
“Wanna find out?”

Before we left, summer had arrived.
I hope you all are enjoying this story so far, and if you aren’t, don’t worry. Once the fort’s population rises, Armok will be pleased indeed.
