The Hunger Games
« on: January 07, 2012, 11:49:11 am »

So, I haven't read this, but it seems to be extremely popular.  Is it good?  Would anyone here recommend it?

I read about a page and wasn't fond of the style, but that may be because I grew out of the age bracket.  On the other hand, for some reason it's the Big New Fandom on the net, after the wave of Hetalia melting into Homestuck.

Opinions?

Haven't read them myself, but I know that at my highschool at least one teacher is having their students read it for class.

I'd rate the series as one of my favorites, though I tend to read alot of the somewhat cruddy Forgotten Realms type books so take that as you will. Don't think I liked the last book as much as the others though.

From the short description I've read I get the feeling that I've seen multiple '80s movies with pretty much the same story.

They're pretty good. Not masterpieces by any means, but definitely worth the time to read.

I liked the first book. They're pretty interesting and fun to read (especially when you get to the exciting part) and they're pretty easy reading too. But I really really hated the last book. GURGH THE ENDING...

also what? new fandom on the net... This is the most I've seen of it! But I guess I don't get around the internet often...  :-\

From what a friend has told me, it sounds like a lot like Battle Royal, but in America.

She also said how the whole thing was a satire of reality TV culture.

Whether or not she's right about it, I want to get my hands on the books to see what they're like, considering the premise sounds a lot like a game I want to run.

Yeah, the storyline is basically Battle Royale with some differentiation.  She claims to have not read BR, or seen BR at all, so who knows.  If you want a visceral, non-YA gorefest, just go with Battle Royale.

This book has the kind of Harry Potter effect going on; Many people typically not interested in literature are telling me about it.

That's been around a lot longer than Harry Potter it's called "word of mouth" and it's a powerful tool for both good and evil.

My school made everyone, students, teachers, and administrators, read the first Hunger Games book last year. It's mediocre at best, but now I see people everywhere who are reading the sequels.

I do not recommend it, partially out of spite, partially because it isn't that great.

It's a very good book and worth reading the first one at least, but it's not exactly a classic.
It's aimed more at teens than it is older young adults.
One of my favorite books the year it came out.

I really love the first one, it's got a good mix of appeals with some psychology and social commentary and stuff. But, well, the scene at the end
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
just sort of shows where the second two books go. The second one is still pretty good, but the third one is just too surreal for me.
