So why are my clear glass vials all filled with various dwarven alcohols instead of staying pristine for me to extract valley herbs into them?

In flasks stocks,
=clear glass vial= contents (dwarven wine [2])
*clear glass vial* contents (dwarven wine [2])
*clear glass vial* contents (dwarven rum [3])
*clear glass vial* contents (strawberry wine)
+clear glass vial+ contents (mead [3])
-clear glass vial- contents (dwarven wine [3])
-clear glass vial- contents (dwarven ale)
-clear glass vial- contents (strawberry wine [2])
clear glass vial contents (sewer brew [2])

It's nice that I made some mead but I haven't lately. I don't think I made any mead since making the vials. So, are dwarves using these as drinking cups? I mean, should I have made goblets, or mugs, for that? I thought they just "stuck their head in the barrel"

I don't think the still is doing it

Ideas? I want to extract plants to vial and I don't have a source of sand

Do you have a military?  Are the military set to carry drinks?  Dwarves who are in the military and who are set to carry drinks will need flasks, vials, or other containers to carry their provisions in.  They'll grab the clear glass vials if there's nothing else, and possibly even if there is something else if they're grabbing the most valuable gear they can find.

Yes the three I've zoomed on so far were being carried by dwarves one of whom was in the barracks. I see one unclaimed with two dwarven syrup roasts outside atm though. Let me see if I have enough waterskins. Yeah like twenty and six metal flasks. Maybe they're using the most valuable equipment like the second guy suggested. There's over thirty flasks and waterskins and I only have twenty-six drafted dwarves.

The only dwarves carrying them do appear to be drafted, I just checked a few. So it's not that all dwarves need goblets or something to drink with. It's that my stinking military is using my vials as waterskins when there are waterskins available

I guess that's not really a bug. I still have a lot of sand from "trading" so I'll keep at it but my woodcutters are ornery right now and I'm almost out of logs for ash for potash for pearlash >3 If I make twenty more clear glass vials the military will run out. Or maybe I should make gold flasks. Oh a huge cockroach

I killed it with a shoe. +2 exp +2 shoe user

You can partially prevent this by making flasks from valuable metals.  If you make some flasks from silver, gold, aluminum, platinum, steel, or possibly even iron or brass if your metalsmith is skilled enough, the dwarves will prefer the more-valuable precious metal flasks and use them instead of the clear glass flasks.

Dwarves also never seem to swap flasks, however.  My advice would be to order the items to be dumped, and them remove the dwarves from military and re-add them, so that they restock their flask and go for a non-forbidden flask.  Once they've all got a nice flask of their own, the vials are safe and you can un-forbid them.

OK I have 25 golden salve in a vial. What do I do with it

I also have a weird bug. My Liquid stocks starts with liquid [10]

Which when examined is (liquid [10]):
This is a stack of 10 liquid.

When I zoom to it it goes to the center of the trade depot where there is some rotted food but no "liquid". What is that

Traders sometimes bring barrels of 'liquid'.  This is a bug:

You can't use it for anything.  It appears to be linked to the sea lamprey having the SPECIALATTACK_SUCK_BLOOD tag, for some bizarre reason this causes civilizations with access to sea lampreys to come with generic 'liquid' to your fortress.

Wow, really?  Liquid traces back to sea lampreys?  Sometimes... I really love DF's bugs.  I feel like we should chronicle all these hilarious bugs.

So interesting

So the basic value of golden salve is 2500. But how do I trade it? I can't find it under "extracts" on move items to depot screen

Unintentional features. Not bugs.

Look at your vials on the trade screen.  The real valuable ones are the ones containing the salve.

Search for it.  You can usually search for "vial" or "golden" to find it.  Unless it got put into a mixed food barrel, in which case you probably need to search for "barrel" and sort by value.

Also, make sure you sell (or forbid) it before you add more dwarves to your military, otherwise one of them will equip it for drink storage and add some alcohol to it. This is also a bug.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

They won't drink from mugs.

as you people call it, 'trade' with them.
I prefer the water flood
That's not trading. That's murder.

...

Plus, it leaves you with a ton of useless crap (exceptional quality trumpets, bars of metal you don't need, etc) that clutter up your stockpiles, and then you have to deal with that crap.

...

Of course, I myself shouldn't talk. I have yet to kill caravans and loot them, and see the results.
