Serrated blade materials
« on: January 06, 2012, 01:08:42 am »

Is it worth it to make these things out of steel, as oppossed to iron? I mean, clearly steel is better as a general rule, but is it THAT much of a difference?

I've embarked in an area with almost no precious metals i.e gold silver etc. But i'm overflowing in heatite, limonite and magnetite. Also, the most common stone is dolomite. So the availiability isn't an issue. Just wondering.

A stack of steel serrated discs will shred pretty much everything that isn't trap avoid. So it's worth it - almost too worth it. Don't expect survivors for your military :P

Generally, armor has at least a good chance of deflecting attacks from weapons of lesser metals, so any invaders who come in armor superior to bronze would be protected from iron discs. However, in vanilla, goblins come only with iron, bronze, and copper armor, none of which are sufficient to block iron discs. In addition, for some reason no enemy comes with leg or arm armor, so even a modded race that wears steel will still be vulnerable to having their limbs lopped off, which is typically rapidly fatal anyway.

In short, unless you have a modded-in invader race with modded-in armor that has a robe's coverage but mail shirt or breastplate's protective qualities, even glass or possibly wood is sufficient for saw disc traps.

Ahhhhh good. I like the sound of tearing everything to ribbons that doesn't have trapavoid.

Now, is there a way to make em harder to dodge?

Put a pit on either side with MOAR TRAPS

They'll dodge and fall off, and since they fall they become stunned which means (I think) that the traps automatically hit. Of course, your dwarves that fall will get hit by traps so be wary.

You have all types of iron ores, and dolomite. So why you make dolomite mugs but not steel cabinets?

Why?

Also, what is "candy"?

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I make them out of green glass.  It may be an inferior material, but if you have sand and magma you can build an unlimited amount of them.  Once your glassworkers are at legendary state (which is not hard to do, if you have them making glass items non-stop) you can build weapon traps with ten masterwork green glass serrated disks per trap.  Those will kill nearly all invaders, despite glass being inferior to most metals, and you can just make as many as you like.

Oh the horror of green glass serrated disks lopping off limbs like they're cheese.

Why?

Also, what is "candy"?

Candy=spoilermetal=HFS.
Perhaps I should have been more clear - I know perfectly well that "candy" refers to Adamantine, and I also think it's an idiotic euphemism that does nothing but confuse newbies.

Let me rephrase my original 'question':

Also, what is "candy"? The only materials you can use to make large, serrated discs are glass (green, clear, and crystal) and weapons-grade metal (copper, silver, bronze, bismuth bronze, iron, steel, and Adamantine).
