Poll for Interest: Wooden Ores

In TES Ebony is just a form of tiered metal, which in itself is incredibly easy to mod in.  Though, I'd be extremely curious about being able to harvest trees and process the wood to produce metal, sort of how you could theoretically harvest animals to get the iron from their blood.  While iron-blood is much more sophisticated and more alchemic, I think dwarves would be able to smelt metal out of anything, even wood.

Well as ebony exists it is an incredibly dense wood and was a wonderful little renewable for whacking stick. I expect giving its material stats that of something half way between steel and adamantine in it's raws and giving it a weapon material tag (Like Spellwood is in Genesi Mod) would have the desired effect. Perhaps this would be easier than adding a new metal vein altogether into worldgen processes. Though...it does sound the domain of the pointy eared tree huggers
My idea would be a bit different.  Add a reaction to the smelter, taking 10 ebony logs and producing 1 ebony bar, with the bar being a defined metal and not some hax "it's a metal now" using get_reagent_type or anything.  I'd probably give it properties between bronze and steel, as it is renewable and shouldn't be too powerful.  It wouldn't be TES Ebony but my own little toy.
There's the basic idea.  Any thoughts?  I'm debating modding this in, perhaps with multiple ore types.  I may work this into my half-assed modding idea of a wasteland, by making all ore come from trees and making all soil undigable.  In the meantime, though, what's the general opinion of smelting trees?

I like the idea of semi-metallic trees. Possibly a mineral life form which resembles a tree. Reminded of the...flowers from a series of books which may or may not be the sword of shannarah and something to do with elfstones which were metallic, would harvest the suns rays during the day and turn them into Frikkin Laser Beams during the night to create impromptu fertiliser. Might also be a way of prospecting the metal layers beneath. Shallow metals manifesting in some of the trees? Yay suggestive speculation. I think it's a fab idea but, who didn't expect that?

Perhaps the 'metal' form could be just named Ebon or 'black'. I also suggest giving it the ability to hold an edge better than steel while retaining it's great density fitting in with the TES lore of it being fairly dense and hefty, afterall, it makes the second best armour (Save dragon products, fucking Akiviri) and holds a razor edge, Daedric being the best of the lot and that is Ebony tempered with the blood fo daedra. As it stands i'd also suggest upping the reaction value to 3 logs to make 1 ingot, and then 3 ingots to make something (As DF smithing is SUPPOSED to work). That is how i'd interpret it if we are kinda edging around TES lore. Of course, this is not my mod.

The metal has been renamed ebon, and I also changed the ebony tree to [BIOME:ANY_TROPICAL] to make it a bit more common.

I shall be changing it to have the edge of steel. (Also, it uses 4 logs. The other two are just at the bottom.)

EDIT: What does Molar mass do? And Max edge?

I'm not exactly working purely off TES lore here, though it should be a bit better than bronze I wouldn't make it as strong as Steel, simply because it's renewable and it'd be way overpowered to have a better-than-steel farm for infinite metal.

My likely best use of this will be my oft-talked-about but rarely-tinkered wasteland mod, where copper or such becomes a tree ore.

That sounds a fairly good compromise. Before Skyrim let me mine Ebony i always assumed it was either a tree or something akin to Bog Oak, which through the anaerobic conditions of peaty, acidic bogs has become a dense, lustrous black substance. So petrified wood that would hold an edge, basically. Which goes back to the whole difficulty with genning new veins. Or even making it a weapons grade gem. Augh, brain, overflowing.

As a side note, I've often been interested in the "realistic farming" mod, which makes crops take like 2-4 whole seasons to grow.  Perhaps there could be a plant that takes a year to grow and takes 5 crops to make 1 bar?  That's about what a legendary farmer will produce.

Molar mass is the number of grams per mole(in rl), and shouldn't actually do anything. Post the density and I can try and get a rough estimate...

Well Deon introduced the Stonecutters workshop which will spit out a random ore 10% of the time, which i expect represents the trace amount of ore in most generic rock. Perhaps a vine or weed which extracts trace metals from soil to produce bunches of metal fruit. Which can also be brewed into hilarious metal based alcohol! Silverberry Wine, Ironthorn Brew, Gold...Trumpet...swill. That would sort of handwave away the problem of WHY you can smelt this plant into ingots.

Also; I underestimated quite how excellently Ebon Warhammer rolls around on the tongue.

When the next version comes out, Ironthorn Ale could slowly produce sensor nerve damage as a disease, and turn skin harder and raise the toughness trait through curses.

Perhaps cause the dwarf to grow lethal spikes which produces a retributive effect on unarmed strikes against him and makes wrestlers truly scary. Bronzeberry Wine causing the dwarfs fat layer to become hard and dense, increasing his overall mass my many degrees. Silvermoss Rum regenerates lost bits, lost a limb to a jabberer? Feed him this expensive and rare drink (1 in 10 fruits provide a seed?) or even syndrome nerve damage can be recovered from, making your dorf not a vegitable any more.

You know If you're going for the TES route you might want to think about getting amber from trees, Like in the shivering Isles.
