I would have loved if they had tested out their account system before launching the alpha. I understand the issue but am still disappointed as I am one of a couple of hundred people who's account is fubar. It's a minor complaint but a reminder of the inexperience of the team.

Castle Story and Zomboid make me want to start an independent game publishing company. Great developers and game designers don't always make great business decisions.

You know what I like? Having to go make an account on yet another goddamn service I don't use. Yeah, I get that their bandwidth requirements make it so they can't host it themselves. I still find it annoying as shit. Would have been nice if they'd used some of that $700,000k for webspace and bandwidth. Maybe it cut too deeply into their poster budget.....

You realize that Castle Story downloads directly to your computer and you never need to use the Humble Bundle site ever again, right?

I'm also not experiencing any of the login problems everyone else seems to be getting. It's been working perfectly every time.

Does the client update itself when it's on your PC? Otherwise, I expect you'll be returning to the Humble Bundle site for the alpha, beta and updates.

How are people liking it so far? I haven't had a chance to download it yet, and probably won't until tomorrow at the earliest.

So far my biggest complaint is that I want to rebind the screen movement button to shift. Or just get of that fact that you need to press a button to move the screen at all.

@nenjin: Even so, why do you even care? The Humble Bundle site is hardly any Windows Live. In fact, you hardly need to spend 2 or 3 minutes on the site to get shit done. Your post just comes off as overly whiney.

Seems like an independent game publisher sort of defeats the point of being independent. :)

Although isn't Indie Fund something close to this?

My account also is fubar'd. At least we have the kickstarter pledges as receipts..

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

Perhaps. Then again, considering a lot of people who paid for it can't get it to work, possibly because they're handing accounts between castlestory.net and the Humble Store.....perhaps not. Perhaps if they'd managed it themselves, I both wouldn't have to make an account on a service I don't plan to ever use...and people might actually be getting the product they already paid for.

Part of the reason I am scoffing at you is because you don't seem to get that fact that Signing up for humblebundle.com just requires you enter your Email and make a password for the site. And if you had just remembered your damned Username and password for castlestory.net, maybe you wouldn't be having problems.

But.. but... why even have DRM on a prototype?

Not to drive this too far off topic, but as far as I know, GOG is not a publisher, it is simply a distributor. Publishers have more responsibilities than just financing a project or making it available for purchase.

If you look at the major indy projects we have followed over the past 3 or 4 years, you can develop a pattern of highs and lows. You can start seeing instances where good projects let their fans down or ran into issues and most of these instances are common between projects. In a lot of cases the games or kickstarters were successful regardless but it did damage the credibility of the team.

As for having a publisher defeating the purpose of being independent... that really depends on the publisher. If the publisher takes responsibility over the business and community management issues and lets the developer focus on programming and game design then the game design is still independent.

I have seen community management and offsite backups doom projects.

Admittedly I don't really know much about the publishing industry but I know there are independent book and music publishers.

I refer you to Project Zomboid. They had no DRM on their initial builds and it got passed around and there was literally no incentive to pay.

Because people donated extra to get access to it, I guess.
