Underground rivers no longer exist if you're playing DF 2010. Instead, you will find large, spacious caverns, usually with a body of water in one area, and populated by underground flora and fauna.

Cave spiders are vermin and as such are mostly invisible. Occasionally, you'll see little white .s; those can be cave spiders. It's impossible to kill them normally, though cats will hunt and kill them automatically. However, since cave spiders are mostly harmless and create silk for you endlessly, it's better to not kill them.

Giant cave spiders, on the other hand, are actually dangerous, but can be killed with traps or soldiers. They're actual creatures that show up as wild animals. Even if giant cave spider silk is present in your caverns, however, it's not necessarily (or even usually) true that a GCS is actually present. It just means that one can come in off the map edges. References to the GCSs being hidden around the map always refer to earlier versions of the game and are no longer applicable.

Cave spiders should be killed on sight, lest they bite your craftsmen and doom them to an eternity of crap crafts.

In my current fort I'm in possession of a zombie GCS. It gives me two things; miasma and silk.

Anyway, do not try an engage it. Lead it into a cage trap with bait (a wooden door).

Started on a magmocalypse device yet?  ;D

(Also, if you're new, you might not know about the DF Gameplay Questions Sub-forum, specifically for questions. Another useful resource is the wiki. Sorry if you already know about these.)
